The Washington Commanders are being linked to a wide receiver in ESPN’s latest 2027 mock draft, with the network projecting them at No. 10 overall and landing Indiana receiver Charlie Becker.
That forecast comes with a pretty bleak wrinkle: ESPN’s mock has Washington without a trade, which would place the Commanders in the tenth-worst spot in the league and well outside the playoff picture. It’s a rough call for a team that reached the NFC Championship in 2024, especially with season opener still days away.
A lot of Washington’s outlook still comes back to Jayden Daniels. The quarterback dealt with three different injuries last season, and if he stays on the field all year, the Commanders have a real shot to stay in the postseason mix. But there are obvious questions beyond Daniels’ health, and wide receiver depth has been one of the biggest ones.
Terry McLaurin is locked in as the top target, Stefon Diggs was added as the No. 2, and rookie Antonio Williams is expected to work as the No. 3.
Williams is still an unknown as a third-round pick, while McLaurin missed time last year. Diggs, meanwhile, is coming off his seventh 1,000-yard season and should give Daniels a major boost this season.
If Washington really does wind up picking in the top 10, Becker would make sense as a target. ESPN’s Jordan Reid pointed to both the present and future of the position when explaining the fit:
“Even though Stefon Diggs just signed with Washington, he'll be 33 years old and it's unclear if he'll be the Commanders' WR2 past this season. There's still a need for help opposite Terry McLaurin, and the 6-foot-4, 207-pound Becker was the player I enjoyed studying the most this offseason.
He exploded on the scene last November and was the X factor in Indiana's run to the national title, averaging 19.9 yards per reception (seventh in the FBS). Becker combines deep speed with elite ball tracking and excellent hand-eye coordination.
His skill set would perfectly complement Jayden Daniels ' deep-ball proficiency.”
The age issue is hard to ignore. Diggs’ long-term outlook is naturally in question because of where he is in his career, and McLaurin turns 31 this month, which only adds to the urgency at receiver for Washington. Becker is viewed as one of the top wideout names in the class right now, though that could shift before the draft arrives near the end of April.
Receiver isn’t the only path the Commanders could take in Round 1. Offensive line is another area that could get serious consideration, and that’s no surprise given the questions already surrounding Washington’s front. With quality linemen often tough to find in free agency, the draft may be the better place for the Commanders to make sure Daniels has the protection he needs for the long haul.
