Commanders Draft Plan Takes Surprising New Turn

Commanders' draft strategy evolves as newly acquired talent reshapes their focus on key positions, hinting at a strategic pivot for the 2026 NFL Draft.

With the 2026 NFL Draft just around the corner, the Washington Commanders are starting to reveal their strategy. After Adam Peters made some big moves in free agency, it seems unlikely they'll be using their No. 7 overall pick on a certain prospect.

Initially, the Commanders were in dire need of an edge rusher. Last season, they relied on Dorance Armstrong Jr. and Deatrich Wise Jr., both of whom suffered season-ending injuries. This left head coach Dan Quinn in a tough spot, trying to fill the gaps with players like Jacob Martin, Preston Smith, and an out-of-position Frankie Luvu.

Now, that issue seems resolved. With the additions of Odafe Oweh and K'Lavon Chaisson, and solid depth from Charles Omenihu, along with the return of Armstrong and Wise, Washington appears set on the edge. This makes it unlikely they'll draft Miami's Rueben Bain Jr.

A new mock draft suggests the Commanders might select Rueben Bain Jr., but that doesn't quite align with their current needs. A month ago, Bain would have been a top contender. Now, it's a bit of a head-scratcher.

"There are plenty of teams looking for defensive talent in various roles this draft. The Commanders might consider safety Caleb Downs and linebacker Sonny Styles, but Rueben Bain remains in the conversation despite the offseason moves."

The only scenario where Bain makes sense is if Peters and his team decide to choose the best available player, but even then, there might be better fits on the board. While Bain is expected to be a solid pro, he's not being hailed as a surefire Hall of Famer.

Styles and Downs, also mentioned in the mock draft, are generating just as much buzz and could be better fits for Washington. The Commanders could use another linebacker and a starting safety to pair with Nick Cross.

Moreover, there's a notable gap at wide receiver beyond Terry McLaurin. This could make Carnell Tate an intriguing option, especially if Brandon Aiyuk isn't signed. Running back Jeremiyah Love could also be considered, though drafting a running back in the first round is always a hot topic.

Ultimately, it's tough to predict Peters' exact thoughts, and Bain might still be in the mix. But it would be surprising if he ends up being their pick, as Washington might benefit from focusing on other positions.
