The Commanders had eyes on two college matchups this past Friday, sending scouts to Texas Tech-Houston and Missouri-Troy before their Week 2 loss to the Dallas Cowboys.
Texas Tech-Houston was the more intriguing stop, and not just because it shaped up as one of the better games on the college slate. Both teams have draft-level quarterbacks, but Washington’s scouts also had plenty of defenders worth tracking.
One of the biggest names in that group was first-team All-American defensive lineman A.J. Holmes Jr.
Houston also put a pair of cornerbacks in the spotlight. Will James and Jalen Mayo each came away with an interception, and Mayo added four total tackles.
On the offensive side, wideout Amare Thomas turned in a strong showing as well, catching seven passes for 75 yards and a touchdown. With Washington already 0-2, the game offered a look at potential help at receiver and on defense, two areas that could use it.
At Missouri, the focus likely shifted to running back Jamal Roberts. He handled 22 carries for 128 yards and a touchdown, while also adding two catches for 13 yards. Washington has Jacory Croskey-Merritt in the mix, but the scouting lens here seems obvious: the Commanders may be searching for more backfield talent, and Roberts gave them a useful data point.
That search could stretch well into the season. The Big 12, in particular, appears to be stocked with running backs, and Washington is likely to keep watching that group closely.
