Commanders Cannot Afford To Reopen The Brandon Aiyuk Drama

The Washington Commanders are steering clear of Brandon Aiyuk's drama as they focus on building a stable and successful path to the playoffs.

Brandon Aiyuk is back in the conversation, and Washington should keep it that way only from a distance.

The San Francisco 49ers wide receiver is applying for reinstatement with the NFL after a messy dispute with his current team landed him on the Niners’ reserve/left squad list. He’s expected to report to San Francisco’s facility on Friday, but there’s still no clarity on whether he wants to play for the 49ers or whether they want him back.

For the Commanders, that’s not a problem worth revisiting.

Aiyuk was one of the biggest names tied to Washington’s offseason last summer, even though he never wore burgundy and gold. At one point, it looked like a real possibility that he’d be a Commanders player in 2026. He wanted to team up with Jayden Daniels, his former Arizona State quarterback, and Adam Peters - the general manager who helped draft him - also appeared interested, according to media reports.

Then everything went sideways.

The 49ers stalled the process, and Aiyuk made things worse with a string of dramatic Instagram videos aimed at his employers. Daniels and his mother even got pulled into the mess, and the third-year quarterback wisely stepped away from the whole thing.

Whether that relationship has been repaired is unclear. What isn’t unclear is that Washington already saw enough.

Aiyuk gave Peters and the Commanders no reason to want to go back down that road. With Washington sitting at 2-4-1, the last thing this team needs is another distraction attached to a player who has already burned through too much goodwill.

The Commanders were right to move on.

They drafted Antonio Williams in the third round, and he’s already looking like a promising complementary piece with room to grow into more. Late in the offseason, Washington added Stefon Diggs, giving the group the veteran presence it needed. Treylon Burks has also put together a solid career resurgence in burgundy and gold.

That gives the Commanders options. It also gives them no reason to gamble on an unpredictable prima donna who could shake up the locker room.

Washington has a division title to chase, and the passing game is working even with second-team All-Pro wideout Terry McLaurin out for the year. The backfield could use help, sure, but Aiyuk doesn’t need to be part of the answer.

He had his shot to join Washington, and if he’d handled things with more maturity this past offseason, maybe the story would be different. It isn’t.

The Commanders should leave the Brandon Aiyuk saga where it belongs: in the past.

Commanders May Be Getting The Rams Defense They Didnt Want

The pass rush the Commanders were hoping to avoid appears to be back on the menu in Week 9. Myles Garrett has been working his way back from knee surgery, and after practicing all week, the star edge rusher is expected to be activated from Injured Reserve ahead of Los Angeles game against Washington.

The Rams are still evaluating his readiness before making it official, but the signs point toward him being available Sunday. For a Commanders offense already staring at a tough matchup, the timing could hardly be worse if Garrett is cleared to suit up. [Read more 🡒]

Commanders Face A Brutal Test With Their Offense Under Pressure

The Rams arrive in Week 9 with some momentum, having bounced back from an earlier loss with two straight wins as they try to push their record above .500. For Washington, the timing is tricky. The Commanders are coming off a win, but the bigger picture still shows a team with a losing record and a roster dealing with injury issues, which makes this matchup feel like a real measuring stick for where the offense stands right now.

Los Angeles brings a balanced challenge, and the matchup leans into the areas where the Rams have looked most capable lately. They have shown advantages both on the ground and through the air against a Washington defense that will have to hold up under pressure for four quarters. With the betting market backing the Rams, the Commanders are left needing a cleaner, more efficient offensive outing than the one they can afford to waste. [Read more 🡒]

Commanders Suddenly Have A Short-Week Roster Squeeze Before Rams Game

Washingtons short week is already turning into a roster-management test before the Rams arrive, with the receiver room taking on some early wear and tear. Treylon Burks missed both practices because of a foot injury, while Dyami Brown was limited with a calf issue, leaving the Commanders to juggle health and availability as they try to get through a quick turnaround.

The moves on the transaction wire showed how tightly things are being managed, with Robert Henry Jr. activated and Ricky Barber moved onto the active roster as Washington keeps patching together depth. The Rams are dealing with their own injury concerns and roster shuffling, including promoting kicker Joshua Karty, so both sides are heading into the matchup with more questions than theyd like for a game that is coming up fast.
