The Washington Commanders are making waves in the NFL offseason, bolstering their defensive front with some significant additions. Leading the charge is linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson, but he's not the only new face aiming to disrupt offenses. The Commanders have also secured the talents of Charles Omenihu, a Super Bowl-winning pass rusher who previously showcased his skills with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Omenihu, standing tall at 6-foot-5 and weighing 280 pounds, is coming off a career-high seven-sack season with the Chiefs. His knack for getting into the backfield was evident as he also matched his personal best with five tackles for a loss. These stats highlight his ability to make an impact, and Washington fans have every reason to be excited about what he brings to the table.
After a successful stint with the Chiefs, Omenihu is returning to the NFC. He previously played for the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 and 2022, and he began his NFL journey with the Houston Texans in the AFC South. This move reunites him with Washington's general manager Adam Peters, who was familiar with Omenihu's capabilities during his time as assistant GM with the 49ers.
Peters is clearly on a mission to revamp the Commanders' defense, and his aggressive approach is evident. Alongside Chaisson and Omenihu, the Commanders made headlines by signing Odafe Oweh to a $100 million deal. Oweh's addition was unexpected, as he wasn't initially linked to the team, but his presence is sure to bolster the defensive unit.
The upgrades don't stop at the line. Veteran cornerback Amik Robertson has inked a two-year deal, providing experience and depth to the secondary. Additionally, former Indianapolis Colts safety Nick Cross has been brought on board, further strengthening the back end of the defense.
These moves come as Washington looks to improve on a defense that allowed 26.5 points per game last season. With these strategic additions, the Commanders are clearly focused on tightening up their defense and making a strong push in the upcoming season.
