With training camp now in focus, the Washington Commanders still have one lingering question hanging over their offseason: will they let the chance to bring in Stefon Diggs slip away?
The speculation has not gone quiet, and one NFL analyst thinks there’s a real football case for making the move before Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles. In a conversation with JP Finlay of 106.7 The Fan, Yahoo Sports analyst Eric Edholm laid out why Diggs could still make sense for Washington.
Edholm pointed to the idea that Diggs may have shown enough last season to be trusted in the right environment. Even with the baggage that has followed him, he believes the veteran receiver could still fit as a steady presence next to Terry McLaurin if general manager Adam Peters wants another reliable target.
"Is Stefon Diggs the more reliable guy at this point? Is he the guy that may have proven last year, even while he got released, that he can be a good soldier for a team, and he can fall in line and be a supportive guy for a young quarterback, not demand the limelight and all that?
That was the reputation that followed him and obviously kind of marred some of his great work. I almost kind of wonder if he isn't a legitimate option."
Edholm also drew a contrast between Diggs and Brandon Aiyuk, suggesting the Commanders may be better served by the quieter, more straightforward path. Diggs, meanwhile, has kept a low profile, working and waiting for his next chance while his legal issue is now over, with one pending.
From a pure football standpoint, the appeal is obvious. Diggs was on a snap count last season, his first after recovering from a torn ACL, and still topped 1,000 receiving yards as the New England Patriots reached the Super Bowl. Whatever the ceiling looks like now, he showed last season that there is still plenty left in the tank.
The other piece here is fit. Diggs has made it clear he wants his next stop to be closer to home, and he reportedly wanted to talk with the Commanders earlier this offseason.
Washington, though, did not engage at that point. ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler reported that Peters was looking for more speed, which would have worked against Diggs.
Still, the market is moving. Peters is taking his time and evaluating everything, including the young receivers already in the building.
If they don’t meet the standard, that could open the door. The longer Washington waits, though, the more likely it becomes that Diggs lands somewhere else.
