Sonny Styles is about to find out how fast the NFL can move.
The Washington Commanders rookie linebacker steps into Week 2 against the Dallas Cowboys with a much heavier load on his shoulders, and without Frankie Luvu beside him to steady the operation. That turns Styles into the centerpiece of a defense trying to handle one of the league’s most dangerous offenses in the Commanders’ second game of the regular season.
Washington has been high on Styles since the pre-draft process. The Commanders came away impressed by what they saw, and when he was still available at No. 7 overall, general manager Adam Peters didn’t wait around.
That belief was easy to understand after Styles’ first real look in a regular-season setting against the Philadelphia Eagles. After taking plenty of heat for a quiet preseason stretch, he answered with a more composed outing, collecting his first NFL sack and looking comfortable in coverage. He finished with just four tackles, which he wasn’t satisfied with, but there were enough positive signs to make Washington feel better about where he is headed.
The problem is that Week 2 brings a very different test.
Luvu’s injury, a groin issue that forced him off the field, changes the picture for everyone around Styles. His absence strips away the veteran presence that made the communication cleaner and the responsibilities easier to sort through.
That was especially noticeable with Leo Chenal also making his first regular-season appearance for the club. The missed familiarity showed up more in pre-snap organization than in anything else.
A week of extra work should help. It has to.
The Commanders head to AT&T Stadium facing a Cowboys team that did not exactly light up the scoreboard in Sunday Night Football against the New York Giants, but the talent is there, and the urgency will be too. Dallas is at home for its opener and trying to avoid an 0-2 start, which means Washington should expect a sharp response.
That puts even more on Styles’ plate.
He is likely to wear the green dot, which means he has to keep everyone lined up correctly while still handling his own assignment. It is a demanding job for any linebacker, let alone a rookie, but that is part of why the Commanders trusted him in the first place.
Styles’ size and athleticism were obvious. What pushed him over the top was the way he carried himself: the leadership, the ability to diagnose offenses, and the sense that he could be the player teammates naturally lean on.
That moment has arrived earlier than expected, but Washington clearly thinks he is ready for it.
Luvu remains a major loss. He is the emotional and instinctive force in the middle of the defense, and those are hard qualities to replace. Still, the Commanders believe Styles can grow into that role, and fast.
He is still learning the speed of the league. He is still figuring out how much more demanding every snap becomes at this level. But his debut offered enough to suggest the game is starting to slow down for him.
Now comes the harder part.
Being LB1 is a different kind of pressure, and there is no hiding from it against Dallas. Luvu was the safety net.
That safety net is gone. Chenal brings experience from his four seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, but it is not the same as having Luvu beside him.
This is Styles’ chance to take control. A strong performance against the Cowboys would do more than help Washington’s chances in Week 2. It would announce that the Commanders’ faith in their rookie linebacker was never misplaced.
