Two weeks into his first season in Washington, Commanders defensive coordinator Daronte Jones is already staring at one of the NFL’s least comfortable realities: whether a personnel change is coming in the secondary.
Jones was asked Thursday if he was ready to start making changes on defense, and he didn’t duck the issue. He called it “a touchy topic,” then laid out the process that has to come before any decision is made.
“You gotta assess why are those mistakes occurring? Maybe it’s just out of that particular game.
Maybe there is a communication aspect of it. So, what may appear to be this player’s fault, could be some underlying factors involved.
Maybe he’s just playing with someone else, things like that.”
Washington’s cornerback situation has been unsettled early. Amik Robertson and Mike Sainristil are starting, while Rasul Douglas, Fabian Moreau, and newly added Isaac Yiadom are behind them.
So far, the Commanders have leaned heavily on zone because they don’t trust their corners in man coverage. They’ve also mixed in a fifth defensive back with a third safety, but nothing in the secondary has really stood out.
Jones said the evaluation has to start with the cause of the problem before anyone gets moved.
“So, you gotta first dive into why it’s happening. If it’s become a player like, ‘Hey, this guy is just not doing what we are asking him to do.'
Then you have to make a personnel change in that regard. So, that is always a flowing situation, and it can change case by case, person by person, situation by situation.“
He also said it would not be a surprise if Yiadom is active this week against the Seahawks. If that happens, the Commanders would then have to decide which corner sits out in Week 3.
