Chris Paul Surge Stuns Commanders as Roster Decisions Loom

Chris Paul's rapid improvement has intensified scrutiny on the Commanders' decision-makers as they weigh his future role and impact on the team's offensive line strategy.

Chris Paul’s journey with the Washington Commanders is a testament to perseverance and seizing opportunity. Just a year ago, his prospects seemed bleak, but now he’s on the verge of a significant payday.

Initially, Paul’s NFL career was a slow burn. Over three seasons, he logged 506 snaps, mostly filling in at left guard during Saahdiq Charles' absence in 2023.

Consistency was elusive, though, and when GM Adam Peters brought in Nick Allegretti for the 2024 season, Paul's chances seemed even slimmer. With Sam Cosmi healthy and the addition of Laremy Tunsil and rookie Josh Conerly Jr., the offensive line was crowded.

Paul’s future with the team appeared uncertain.

However, when both Coleman and Allegretti faltered, Paul got his shot at left guard and didn’t look back, starting the final 15 games of the season. His journey from benchwarmer in 2022 to a key starter in 2025 is remarkable.

Initially, his aggressive style was evident, but technical issues plagued him. Playing too upright, he struggled against powerful interior defenders.

Yet, with time and coaching, Paul refined his skills.

While still not the quickest in run blocking, his pass protection improved dramatically. His Pro Football Focus grades soared, ranking him among the top five left guards in the league for pressure rate.

With a 3.18% pressure-allowed rate, he’s now in elite company, trailing only stars like Joe Thuney and Quenton Nelson. Alongside Cosmi, Paul forms one of the league’s top pass-protecting duos.

As he enters free agency, Paul’s market value is projected at around $9.39 million over two years. While the market could be competitive with other quality linemen available, Paul’s proven ability to protect the quarterback makes him a valuable asset.

Now, the decision rests with Peters, head coach Dan Quinn, and offensive coordinator David Blough. Can Paul continue to develop, especially in run blocking?

If the Commanders seek a guard to dominate at the second level, Paul may not fit the bill. However, his modest price and demonstrated potential make a strong case for his retention.

Paul has shown he belongs in the NFL. Whether he’s the Commanders’ long-term solution at left guard is a question that will be answered soon. His journey is a reminder of how quickly fortunes can change in the NFL.
