Austin Ekeler is on track to be back where Washington can use him most: as a veteran safety valve, not a volume back.
NFL insider Ian Rapoport reported that the Commanders are expected to sign the free agent running back to their 53-man roster pending a physical. For Washington, it would be a reunion with a player who already knows the building, the system and the expectations. Ekeler joined the franchise in 2024, played 14 games with eight starts, and saw his 2025 season cut short by an Achilles injury he has since recovered from.
At 31, Ekeler is not being brought in to be the centerpiece of the ground game. Washington already has younger backs ready to handle that side of the job, with Jacory "Bill" Croskey-Merritt and Kaytron Allen both described as young bulls ready to carry the franchise. What Ekeler adds is something different: a trusted passing-game weapon who can line up and function right away.
That’s the appeal here. Call it the Darren Sproles theory, if you will, but Ekeler gives the offense a familiar extra target with 480 career receptions, 4,288 yards, and 30 touchdowns. He brings value beyond simple rushing attempts, giving Washington a dependable option out of the backfield on any down.
His biggest usefulness may come in passing situations, where experience matters and mistakes can be costly. Bringing Ekeler back also means the Commanders don’t have to force Bill or Allen into catching the ball out of the backfield before they’re ready. It lets those younger backs develop while Ekeler handles the trusted, veteran work.
There’s also a fit with Rachaad White, and the two could give Washington another formidable combination alongside the offense’s other weapons. The Commanders do not need Ekeler to take over the backfield. They need another veteran Blough can trust on passing downs, in protection, and as an outlet for the quarterback.
Of course, there’s a clear caveat. Ekeler is coming off a significant Achilles injury, and expecting the version of him who once caught 107 passes in a season would be too much to ask. But Washington does not need that version.
If Ekeler clears his physical and can still protect, get open, and offer a reliable outlet, the Commanders will have added a useful piece to an offense that can use one.
