Washington Commanders general manager Adam Peters didn’t say Brandon Aiyuk’s name on Monday, but he didn’t need to. The message came through loud and clear during Peters’ pre-training camp media availability, and it started with a question that never directly mentioned the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver.
NBC Sports’ JP Finlay asked Peters how much a player’s social media activity matters in the evaluation process. The question drew laughs in the room, but it also opened the door to a revealing answer about what Washington values when it is weighing a potential addition.
“We look at everything. We want to make sure it's the right player to be in our locker room, in our bloodstream, and in our culture.
We look at that stuff. Obviously, it's not the first thing we look at.
You look at the tape, and you talk to the teams the players have been on, and how they were in the locker room. The players that have played with them to make those decisions.”
Peters made clear that social media is not usually the biggest factor in a player decision. Then he added the line that stood out.
"That's not usually a huge part of it... Usually."
That one word carried the weight. In the context of Aiyuk’s situation, it sounded like a strong hint that Washington is not viewing him as a serious option if and when he is eventually released by San Francisco.
Aiyuk’s social media behavior has not gone unnoticed, and his public approach has done him no favors. Rather than staying quiet, working behind the scenes, and properly applying for reinstatement, he took shots at everyone online, failed to hold himself accountable, and made several poor decisions along the way.
Washington fans had been more open to the idea earlier in the offseason. The Commanders were reportedly interested, though not in a trade. Now, though, the idea of Aiyuk landing in Washington looks like a long shot at best.
That fits with how the Commanders operate. They place a premium on character, avoid unnecessary distractions, and already have a strong locker room culture in place. Aiyuk, especially after taking a swipe at quarterback Jayden Daniels on social media, looks like a problem they likely don’t need.
He is currently on the left squad list, and the Niners plan to keep it that way. With him out of sight, frustration has spilled out in other ways, and Peters appears to have noticed.
Nothing is fully off the table, and Washington could always change its mind. Aiyuk could also have a change of heart and finally handle his business the right way in search of another NFL opportunity.
But for now, the way Peters answered the question made one thing pretty obvious: don’t count on it.
