What’s Happening with Brandon Aiyuk?
The NFL offseason always brings its share of surprises, but the situation with Brandon Aiyuk and the San Francisco 49ers has left many scratching their heads. The expectation was that the 49ers would release Aiyuk, and the Washington Commanders, with some encouragement from former Arizona State quarterback Jayden Daniels, would swoop in with a one-year prove-it deal.
Yet, as the new league year kicked off on Wednesday, Aiyuk is still with the 49ers. So, what's the holdup?
The business side of football can be ruthless, and the 49ers are feeling the pinch. Aiyuk, who inked a hefty four-year, $120 million extension in August 2024, hasn't delivered the return on investment the team hoped for.
With just seven games and 25 catches for 374 yards to show for it, the 49ers are eager to recoup some value, possibly through a trade. Holding onto Aiyuk until the draft could be a strategic play, with hopes of securing a later-round pick rather than releasing him for nothing.
Aiyuk's troubles began during a matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs on October 20, 2024, when he suffered a torn ACL and MCL, sidelining him for the season. However, the real concern for the 49ers was the unexpected turn his rehabilitation took in 2025.
Knee injuries are a harsh reality in the NFL, often requiring a grueling 9-12 month recovery period. Most players embrace this challenge, knowing it's their ticket back to the field.
Unfortunately, Aiyuk's journey through rehab was rocky. The 49ers claim that Aiyuk, despite receiving his guaranteed salary for the 2025 season, began missing rehab sessions and eventually cut off communication with the team.
This lack of engagement meant he didn’t see any action in 2025.
As a result, the 49ers have decided to move forward without Aiyuk, voiding $27 million in guarantees for the 2026 season. Aiyuk, on his part, isn’t contesting the penalties, possibly acknowledging his role in the situation.
The football world waits to see how this saga unfolds, but one thing is clear: both Aiyuk and the 49ers are charting new courses, and the implications could ripple through the league.
