The NHL offseason handed a clear boost to four teams that needed it most, and the Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils, Florida Panthers, and New York Rangers all came out of it looking better equipped for 2026.
Washington’s front office wasted little time attacking the problem after the club missed the playoffs for the first time under Spencer Carbery. The Capitals added Alex Tuch from Buffalo, Jordan Kyrou from St Louis, and Boone Jenner in free agency, giving the roster a much stronger look across the board. With Alex Ovechkin in his final season, Washington has assembled a group that can threaten in a meaningful way if the pieces click.
New Jersey’s biggest swing came by moving on from Jacob Markstrom, and the return gave the Devils a useful piece in Evan Rodriguez. He brings scoring that can sneak up on opponents, along with the kind of two-way work that helps a forward stay on the ice in key moments.
If the team stays healthy, it has a real chance to sit in the top half of the Metropolitan. The big question is still in goal, where Nico Daws and Jake Allen will have to deliver enough consistency once the season starts.
Florida had its own offseason story shaped by injury news, including word that Brad Marchand recently underwent surgery. Even so, the Panthers made one of the loudest moves of the summer by acquiring Brady Tkachuk, who now joins his brother Matthew in Florida. That pairing gives Paul Maurice two elite forces to work with, and the Panthers also added enough help to give themselves a better shot at getting back into the playoff mix in a tough division.
The Rangers took a different route after a season that included nine shutouts and serious home-ice problems. They addressed the blue line by bringing in Marcus Petterson and Sean Durzi, then reshaped their center depth after Vincent Trocheck’s departure.
Mika Zibanejad and JT Miller head that group now, with Noah Laba and Joel Veneno also in the mix. Albert Smits is pushing for an opening-night spot, while New York will need Alexis Lafreniere and its young core to take another step forward.

Capitals Camp Battle Just Got More Interesting With Josh Dunne
The Capitals added another name to their forward mix in free agency, signing center Josh Dunne to a one-year, $850,000 contract as they continue shaping the bottom of the roster. The 27-year-old spent last season with the Buffalo Sabres, getting into 34 games and even seeing playoff action, which gives Washington a little more recent NHL experience to evaluate as camp approaches.
For a team still sorting out its depth chart, Dunnes arrival makes the competition a bit more interesting. He is expected to push for a spot in training camp, and if he does not stick with the Capitals, he would give the organization another option for the Hershey Bears, where reliable two-way depth is always valuable over a long season.
