Alex Ovechkin’s NHL run is headed for one last lap.
The Washington Capitals star announced that the 2026-27 season will be his final year in the league, making the news before the team’s first home game of his 22nd NHL season. The announcement came through the Capitals’ official social media account and on NHL.com.
In a message to fans, Ovechkin said:
“My family and I decided this summer that this will be my final year in the NHL. I love this game so much, but I know in my heart it’s the right decision.
It was important for me to make this announcement before our first home game, so I have the chance to thank all the people around the game, everyone who has been so important to me and my family and helped me through good times and tough losses. I wouldn’t have been able to achieve everything I have in my life without them.
I am excited about this season with my teammates, and we will do everything we can to make this year special. I am going to enjoy every moment with my family, my boys, our fans and everyone who has been part of my hockey career.”
He finished with, “See you Wednesday, babes!”
Ovechkin’s decision closes the book on a career that already sits at the top of the goal-scoring mountain. He enters the season as the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer after breaking Wayne Gretzky’s record in April 2025. And even with retirement now on the horizon, there’s still plenty left for him to chase.
He is 11 goals away from moving past Wayne Gretzky’s 1,016 for the most combined regular-season and playoff goals in NHL history. He also needs 12 points to hit 1,700 career points, and 36 more to go by Mario Lemieux for ninth on the NHL’s all-time points list.
One more 20-goal season would tie Gordie Howe’s league record of 22. He is also 33 games away from passing Patrick Marleau’s 1,607 for the second-most games played with a single franchise in NHL history, 4 assists from overtaking Nicklas Backstrom for the most assists in Capitals history, and 25 games short of 1,600 career games.
A one-year, $4.25 million extension for 2026-27 had already pointed toward this being the end. Some reports had suggested he might not come back at all, but roster moves made another season in Washington more appealing.
The summer brought extra noise around Ovechkin, too. He waited several weeks to decide on returning while the Capitals added players such as Alex Tuch and traded for Jordan Kyrou, and that uncertainty fed speculation that he might retire. Backlash also flared again in September after he appeared in a United Russia campaign ad, though Ovechkin did not mention that in his statement.
It remains unclear whether he’ll step away from hockey entirely after this season or continue his career in Russia, a possibility that has long been discussed.
