The Anaheim Ducks have put defenseman Nick Jensen on waivers with the intention of sending him to the AHL’s San Diego Gulls, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman.
Jensen has played three games for Anaheim to open the 2026-27 regular season, producing a goal and an assist while averaging 15:20 of ice time. The Ducks brought in the 36-year-old right-shot defenseman on July 1 with a two-year deal carrying a $2.25 million AAV.
His latest outing came in Thursday’s 7-6 loss to the Buffalo Sabres, when he picked up an assist in 18 shifts and logged 14:49 of ice time. Anaheim’s move may also point to a pair of injured defensemen nearing a return, since Pavel Mintyukov and Ian Moore both skated with the team on Saturday.
Jensen’s path to the NHL began with the Detroit Red Wings, who selected him in the fifth round, No. 150 overall, of the 2009 NHL Draft. The Rogers, Minn. native spent time with the USHL’s Green Bay Gamblers and at St. Cloud State University before joining the Red Wings organization in the 2013-14 season.
He made his NHL debut with Detroit in 2016 and settled in as a reliable bottom-pairing defender over three seasons there before being traded to the Washington Capitals late in the 2018-19 campaign. Jensen then signed an extension with Washington and turned in some of his strongest play with the Capitals, helping them reach the playoffs five times.
After the 2023-24 season, Washington sent Jensen and a third-round pick to the Ottawa Senators for Jakob Chychrun. Chychrun later delivered back-to-back 20-goal seasons in Washington, while Jensen worked exclusively on Ottawa’s bottom pair. Ottawa then let him walk to Anaheim in free agency after the 2025-26 season.
