Capitals Lose John Carlson Early in Game Against Predators

The Capitals face uncertainty after top defenseman John Carlson exits early with an injury just ahead of the Olympic break.

Capitals Down a Defenseman as John Carlson Exits Early Against Predators

The Washington Capitals were forced to finish Thursday night’s game against the Nashville Predators with just five defensemen after John Carlson exited early with a lower-body injury.

Carlson’s night ended late in the first period during a Capitals power play. While backchecking, he got tangled up with Nashville’s Cole Smith and appeared to tweak something in the process.

He made his way to the bench under his own power, but it was clear he wasn’t moving comfortably. Not long after, the team announced he wouldn’t return.

Before the injury, Carlson had already made his presence felt. He logged just over seven minutes of ice time and picked up an assist, bringing his season total to 56 points in 55 games. That assist also padded his lead as the team’s top playmaker this season - a testament to just how critical he’s been on both ends of the ice.

The 35-year-old has been a steadying force on Washington’s blue line for years, and his absence was immediately noticeable. Playing a man down on defense is never ideal, especially against a team like Nashville that can grind you down with physical play and sustained pressure.

Fortunately for the Capitals, the timing of the injury coincides with the Olympic break, which begins Friday. That gives Carlson - and the team - some valuable time to assess the situation and, hopefully, recover without missing too much game action.

For now, all eyes in D.C. will be on Carlson’s status moving forward. With the playoff push looming, the Caps can’t afford to be without their top defenseman for long.
