Alex Ovechkin has made it official: the 2026-27 NHL season will be his last.
The Washington Capitals superstar told his teammates this morning that this will be his final year in the league, bringing an end to a career that has already rewritten the record book. Ovechkin, who spent years as the face of the Capitals, will walk away after one more season in Washington.

The announcement closes the door on plenty of speculation that followed his chase of Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goals record. After that media storm, it was never totally clear how long Ovechkin wanted to keep going. He has always had a complicated relationship with the spotlight: all swagger and fire on the ice, but far less interested in the off-ice celebrity that comes with it.
There was even confusion last fall, when an email from the Capitals’ PR department appeared to signal that he was retiring after the previous season. Washington quickly clarified that no decision had been made, and Ovechkin eventually signed on for one more year.
Some believed he might try to slip out quietly after the 2025-26 season. Instead, he chose one last run.
And what a career it has been. Ovechkin’s 929 goals stand as the most in NHL history, a total that pushed Gretzky’s once-unthinkable mark even higher into the distance. He also sits 10th all-time in points with 1,688, leaving him within reach of Mario Lemieux’s 1,723 and Steve Yzerman’s 1,755 in his final season.
For the Capitals, he leaves as the franchise’s undisputed standard-bearer. He led them to their first Stanley Cup title in 2018 and collected three Hart Memorial Trophies, the Calder Memorial Trophy in 2006, and nine Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophies over a 13-season stretch.
His statistical footprint is just as imposing. Ovechkin has the most 40-goal seasons in NHL history with nine, the most 30-goal seasons with 20, and the most 20-goal seasons with 21. Even with one more year left, the legacy is already set.
His final home game is scheduled for Sunday, April 4, 2027, against Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Washington will then close the season on the road, with Ovechkin’s last NHL game set for Saturday, April 10, 2027, against the Philadelphia Flyers.

The timing only sharpens the sting for a fan base that has followed every milestone and every chase along the way. Ovechkin Just Turned Washingtons Next Season Into A Last Chance
Alex Ovechkins next season suddenly carries the weight of a farewell tour, with the Capitals captain signaling that the 2026-27 campaign will be his last in the NHL. The announcement came through the teams official social media and NHL.com before Washingtons first home game of his 22nd NHL season, adding a different kind of buzz to a night that was already supposed to celebrate another year of one of the leagues most enduring stars.
For Washington, it also sharpens the stakes around what comes next. Ovechkin already sits atop the NHLs all-time goal list and still has several career milestones in sight, which means the final chapter could be about more than nostalgia. It leaves one bigger question hanging over the end of the road, too: whether this really marks the close of his playing career entirely, or just the end of his NHL run. [Read more 🡒]
