The Washington Capitals will open their 2026-27 training camp on Thursday, Sept. 17, with Caps Media Day at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, senior vice president and general manager Chris Patrick announced.
It will be the Capitals’ 20th training camp at MedStar Capitals Iceplex, the team’s practice home inside the Beltway. The facility has two NHL-sized rinks, and every on-ice session during camp will be open to the public at no cost.
Washington is bringing 52 players into camp: 29 forwards, 17 defensemen and seven goalies. The group will be divided into two separate squads, Group A and Group B, with schedules that will differ throughout camp.
Media Day will be spread across several areas of the building. All media availabilities will take place on the second-floor mezzanine, while one-on-one interviews with local television affiliates will be held on the balcony overlooking the Capitals rink.
The media room outside the Capitals locker room and the interview room on the balcony will both serve as workspace for reporters. Lunch for the media is scheduled after Group A’s availability, around 12 p.m. on the second-floor mezzanine.
Once camp gets rolling, the media setup will shift into a scrum format outside the Capitals locker room. Select players and head coach Spencer Carbery will be available that way after Media Day and through training camp.
The communications staff will announce Carbery’s availability before each practice, and that session will come either between groups or after the final on-ice session. On preseason game days, Carbery will speak after the on-ice session for the game group.
Later in camp, when the roster is down to one group, the Capitals locker room will be open to media.
Reporters planning to cover practice must send requests to Alex D'Agostino in the Capitals communications department at least 24 hours before practice.
The Capitals said the complete training camp roster and the schedule through the first week are listed below, and that player groups and Thursday’s media day availability times will be announced Wednesday afternoon.
