Wake Forest's Playoff Buzz Now Comes With One Huge Catch

Wake Forest's impressive season has them eyeing a landmark College Football Playoff spot, but crucial games lie ahead for the Demon Deacons.

Wake Forest’s bowl picture has turned into something the program could hardly have imagined a year ago.

At 6-1 and sitting No. 14 in the AP poll, the Demon Deacons are no longer just chasing a respectable postseason landing spot. They’re in the College Football Playoff conversation, and ESPN’s latest projections reflect that shift in a big way.

Kyle Bonagura has Wake Forest slotted as the No. 10 seed in the playoff, with a trip to Provo, Utah, to meet No. 7 BYU in the first round. That would put the Deacs at LaVell Edwards Stadium, which would make for the biggest stage in program history if the projection holds.

Bonagura’s bracket has BYU moving on, but even being placed in the field would be a major statement for Jake Dickert in his second season at the helm.

Mark Schlabach’s view is more conservative. He projects Wake Forest to the Trust & Will Holiday Bowl against Oregon on Dec. 28 at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego. That would still be a strong postseason slot, just one that looks far different from the playoff possibilities now hovering around Winston-Salem.

What happens next will decide which direction this goes.

If Wake Forest keeps winning and claims the ACC title, most likely by beating Miami, it would lock up an automatic playoff berth. Given the Deacs’ current form and the schedule ahead, that path is still very much on the table.

But one stumble could change everything. Wake Forest doesn’t have the same cushion as the sport’s established heavyweights, and once the committee starts comparing similar résumés, the margin gets thin fast.

If the Deacs fall short of the playoff, Wake Forest On SI projects them against Houston in the Pop-Tarts Bowl in Orlando, Florida. The postseason picture is still shifting, but for now, Wake Forest has a rare kind of range: from a playoff first-round game to a solid bowl trip, all depending on how the next several weeks unfold.

Wake Forest Gets Another Chance To Prove This Start Is Real

Wake Forest heads into its ACC date with Virginia carrying the kind of attention that comes with a No. 14 ranking, and this one feels like another chance to show the early momentum is more than a hot opening stretch. The Demon Deacons have looked sharp enough to start drawing real belief, and the home setting only adds to the sense that this is a game where they can reinforce their place in the league picture.

Gio Lopez has been a big reason for that, giving Wake Forest steady play at quarterback and helping the offense stay on schedule. Virginia comes in with road issues hanging over it, which makes this matchup a useful measuring stick for the Demon Deacons, even if the broader takeaway may still be about how convincingly they handle it rather than simply whether they win. Wake Forest Hits A Stretch Where Theres Little Room To Slip

Wake Forests calendar is getting crowded in a hurry, with the ACC already putting a time and television window on the Deacons Week 10 date against Merrimack. The game is set for Saturday, Nov. 7 at Allegacy Financial Stadium, and it lands right after Wake Forests trip to face Virginia this weekend, leaving little margin for a slip as the schedule tightens.

The matchup will be the first-ever meeting between Wake Forest and Merrimack, adding a fresh wrinkle to a late-season stretch that already has plenty of attention attached to it. Fans who want a look at that one will get it on the ACC Network, but first the Deacons have to get through Virginia and keep the bigger picture moving in the right direction. [Read more 🡒]
