Wake Forest got more than a win over Akron in Week 1. It also got two players walking away with national recognition.
Linebacker Vinny Firenze and quarterback Gio Lopez both made their first Deacs appearances count, and each earned an award for it. Firenze was named the ACC Linebacker of the Week after a fast start in a crowded linebacker room, while Lopez picked up a Manning Award Star of the Week after lighting up the Zips through the air.
Firenze’s debut had the kind of all-over-the-field feel that coaches love. The transfer from an FCS program stepped in alongside Aidan Hall and Frank Cusano and helped the Deacs smother Akron’s offense.
He finished the game leading Wake Forest in total tackles and solo tackles, and he also forced a fumble. For a player making his first appearance in a Wake Forest uniform, that’s a strong way to announce yourself.
And it wasn’t just the box score that stood out. Firenze was on the field for only 23 snaps, but he kept showing up when it mattered.
His 85.7 defensive rating on PFF was the best among Wake defensive players against Akron, and it ranked fourth among ACC linebackers last week. He was especially effective against the run, where he posted an 86.1 grade.
As he gets more comfortable and sees more snaps, there’s a clear sense that his role could grow.
Lopez’s debut had a different flavor, but the result was just as loud. The North Carolina transfer quarterback threw for 350 yards and three touchdowns, numbers that earned him the Manning Award Star of the Week. That 350-yard outing was his biggest passing game since August 2024.
By halftime, Lopez had already outperformed any game he had last season with the Tar Heels. The connection with Rob Ezell clearly looked comfortable from the jump, and Lopez appeared fully in command of the offense.
He completed 21 passes and spread the ball to eight different receivers. Wake Forest also never had to punt in the first half, a good sign that the offense was staying ahead of the sticks and keeping everything moving.
Now the challenge gets a little bigger. Wake Forest’s next test comes Saturday at noon, when the Deacs head to West Lafayette to face Purdue, a Big Ten opponent.
