The 2026 college football coaching carousel has already started spinning, and three Power 4 openings have quickly drawn plenty of attention. NC State, Baylor, and Maryland are all searching for new head coaches after rough starts forced changes at the top, and Brian Kelly’s name has already been floated for each job.
Kelly, the former Notre Dame and LSU coach, was asked about all three openings Tuesday afternoon by Danny Kanell on the College Sports on SiriusXM broadcast, and he broke down what makes each one appealing.
“They’re all unique. We’re talking about ACC, Big 12, and the Big Ten,” Kelly said.
He pointed first to Maryland and the Big Ten angle, saying the conference carries obvious pull. Kelly also noted the recruiting upside in the area, adding, “From a conference standpoint, the Big Ten has obviously proved itself to have that kind of appeal, right, with Maryland.
It is a fertile recruiting area; there’s no doubt. That DMV area is a really good recruiting area.
I think that they’ve done great things in terms of upgrading facilities.”
NC State, in his view, offers a different kind of draw. Kelly emphasized the recruiting base there too, and said the right coach could win at that level in the ACC.
“NC State, another great recruiting area… I could win this thing at the ACC level, and I think that’s what makes it very attractive, as well as the geographical area.
“And then Baylor, it’s Texas. You’re going to have players at Baylor… They have the ability to be a part of the Playoff, and they have the ability to contend within their own leagues, and that’s what makes each and every one of these jobs attractive in my opinion.”
Kelly’s comments fit the new reality of college football, where NIL, the transfer portal, and the expanded playoff have changed the way coaching jobs are evaluated. With the right hire, each of these programs has a path to the College Football Playoff and a chance to make noise beyond that.
That’s part of why Kelly continues to surface in the conversation. Even after his unceremonious departure from LSU last season, analysts and insiders have still connected him to these openings.

Wake Forest Gets Another Chance To Prove This Start Is Real
Wake Forest gets another chance to show its fast start is built to last when No. 14 takes the field at home against Virginia in an ACC matchup that should say plenty about where this team stands right now. The Demon Deacons have the look of a program that is forcing people to pay attention, and quarterback Gio Lopez has been at the center of it with a steady, efficient passing attack that has helped keep Wake Forest in control of its season.
Virginia, meanwhile, arrives with some questions that have followed it on the road, which is part of why this game feels like more than just another conference date on the schedule. The Cavaliers will need to find answers quickly to make this interesting, but the safer read is that Wake Forest continues to look like a team playing with confidence and real purpose at this stage of the year. Wake Forest's Playoff Buzz Now Comes With One Huge Catch
At 6-1 and No. 14 in the AP poll, Wake Forest has climbed into the kind of national conversation it rarely gets to enjoy this late in a season. The Demon Deacons have put themselves in position as a legitimate College Football Playoff contender, and that alone changes the tone around every remaining game on the schedule.
ESPNs latest bowl projections show just how wide open the path still is, with one analyst slotting Wake Forest into the playoff picture and another sending the Deacons to a more familiar postseason stage. The difference underlines the huge catch attached to the buzz around Winston-Salem: the final destination will be decided by what Wake Forest does from here, especially with the ACC championship still looming as the biggest measuring stick of all. Wake Forest Hits A Stretch Where Theres Little Room To Slip
Wake Forests schedule is starting to narrow, and the next step on the calendar is now set. The ACC announced the kickoff time for the Demon Deacons Week 10 matchup against Merrimack, giving the team a clearer picture as it moves through a stretch that begins with Virginia this weekend and then turns quickly to another home date in Winston-Salem.
The Merrimack game will be played Saturday, Nov. 7, at Allegacy Financial Stadium, and it will mark the first time the two programs have ever met. For Wake Forest, the timing matters almost as much as the opponent, with the ACC Network set to carry the game and the late-season slate beginning to come into focus. [Read more 🡒]
