Virginia Tech’s offense is set to have some real punch when the Hokies open the 2026-27 season against Coppin State on Nov. 3. Mike Young is bringing back two of his biggest scoring pieces from a year ago in Amani Hansberry and Ben Hammond, and the transfer portal has added more options to the mix.
That depth makes the scoring race in Blacksburg an interesting one, and one of the new faces could slide right into the conversation. Elohim, who spent last season at Florida Atlantic, arrives after averaging 12.4 points and 4.2 rebounds per game for the Owls.
The 6-foot-5 guard shot better than 46% from the field and 36% from 3-point range, numbers that should fit neatly into Young’s system. He also brings another player who can create his own shot, which matters when the offense bogs down.
He may not end up at the top of the scoring chart, but a season in the 11- to 12-point range looks realistic.
Hammond has just as strong a case, maybe stronger. He went from 5.6 points per game as a freshman to 13.2 points and 3.2 assists last season, and he was even better against ACC opponents, where he led the team at 14.9 points per game.
He also knocked down 43.1% of his 3s and 86.5% of his free throws, making him one of Virginia Tech’s most reliable offensive pieces. Another offseason of growth could push him even higher, though there’s also the question of how defenses respond now that he’s no longer sneaking up on anyone.
Still, he has a real shot to finish first.
If there’s a safest bet here, it’s Hansberry. He put up 14.3 points and 7.4 rebounds per game last season and emerged as the Hokies’ most steady frontcourt scorer.
The senior also picked up preseason second-team All-ACC honors, and there’s not much reason to expect a dip in his final college season. Around the basket, he should remain one of Young’s go-to options.
With Hammond, Elohim and other scoring threats around him, Hansberry may not have to carry quite as much defensive attention. That could open the door for even more production.
In the end, Hammond and Hansberry look like the two names most likely to trade places at the top of Virginia Tech’s scoring list all season. For now, Hansberry gets the nod by a hair.

Virginia Tech's Final Four Could Change Everything For James Franklin
Virginia Tech has already done enough to secure bowl eligibility, but the next month is where James Franklins first season will really be judged. At 6-2 and sitting fourth in the ACC standings, the Hokies have given themselves a solid foundation, yet the remaining schedule is the kind that can change the tone of an entire year, with four games left and two of them coming on the road against ranked opponents SMU and Miami.
For Franklin, the stretch run is about more than simply padding a record. Senior defensive end Aycen Stevens has helped stabilize one side of the ball, while receiver Brown remains on pace for a major milestone of his own, giving the offense a clear centerpiece as the stakes rise. How Virginia Tech handles this final test will go a long way toward defining not just the season, but the early direction of Franklins tenure. [Read more 🡒]
Virginia Tech's November Ceiling Comes Down To One Brutal Reality
Virginia Techs comeback win over Clemson on Oct. 24 gave the Hokies bowl eligibility and offered a timely reminder that this team can still find a way in a tight spot. With November now carrying the kind of stakes that can reshape a season, the conversation has shifted from simply getting to a bowl to figuring out whether the Hokies have enough in place to survive the tougher stretch ahead, especially with ranked opponents waiting on the schedule.
The next few games will say a lot about how much margin Virginia Tech really has, and the key figures on both sides of the ball will be under the microscope. Ethan Grunkemeyers growth at quarterback, the pressure coming from Stevens up front and the ground games ability to hold up against better defenses all loom large now, because the Hokies do not have much room for slip-ups if they want November to mean more than just making the postseason.
