Virginia Tech’s first loss of the season didn’t knock the Hokies out of the betting market’s good graces.
After a 35-33 defeat to Pitt on Friday, Virginia Tech still opened as a 10.5-point favorite for its Oct. 10 road game at Cal, according to FanDuel Sportsbook. The total is 52.5.
The Hokies had a real shot to steal the win late after erasing an 11-point deficit. Noah Chambers delivered a safety, Davion “FatRat” Brown scored the first receiving touchdown of his college career, and Virginia Tech got one last crack at it. John Love’s 36-yard field-goal try to win the game, though, was ruled wide left.
“We had a chance, obviously, to win it at the end,” said Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin. “Everybody’s going to focus on the last play, and this isn’t coach-speak. We’re going to watch this tape and there’s going to be 20 plays that we could’ve made throughout the game to put us in a better position and not be in that situation at the end.”
Even in defeat, quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer put together a monster day. He threw for a career-high 434 yards, the second-most passing yards in a single Virginia Tech game dating back to at least 1987 and trailing only Bryan Randall’s 504-yard outing against Syracuse in 2002. The downside was the turnovers: Grunkemeyer lost one of two fumbles and threw two interceptions, his first picks of the season.
For the year, Grunkemeyer is 131-of-177 for 1,446 yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions. His 74.0 completion percentage ranks No. 7 in FBS, and his ESPN quarterback rating of 79.7 sits No. 23 nationally.
Virginia Tech’s 4-0 start - its first since 2017 - came against VMI, Old Dominion, Maryland and Boston College. The Hokies rolled through the first three before edging Boston College 21-14.
Cal has taken a different path through its first five games. The Golden Bears opened with a 45-24 loss to UCLA, then beat Syracuse 21-18 to start ACC play 1-0. A 49-7 win over Wagner followed, but losses to Clemson, 24-10, and UNLV, 39-31, have left them at risk of falling below .500 five games into the season.
Against UNLV, Cal was hurt by a second-quarter exit from quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele, who left after a hit to the head and did not return. UNLV quarterback Jackson Arnold accounted for five scores in that game. Sagapolutele has completed 107 of 164 passes for 1,180 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions on the season.
Virginia Tech and Cal are set to meet Saturday, Oct. 10, at 3:30 p.m. ET on ACC Network.

Virginia Tech Let A Winnable Pitt Game Slip Away For One Reason
Virginia Tech had a chance to turn a messy afternoon at Lane Stadium into a statement win, but instead the Hokies let a winnable game against Pitt slip away in familiar fashion. Even while outgaining the Panthers in total yards, Virginia Tech kept undercutting itself with a turnover-prone offense and too many mistakes in critical spots, and the margin for error vanished as the game tightened late.
John Love had a 36-yard field goal try to force the issue as time expired, but the kick missed and Pitt escaped with a 35-33 win. For the Hokies, the frustration went beyond one final snap. Four turnovers and eight penalties left too much room for the Panthers to stay alive, and it turned a game Virginia Tech had every reason to control into another hard-luck loss. [Read more 🡒]
Pitt Escaped Virginia Tech With A Win Fans Will Debate All Week
Virginia Tech had a chance to turn a tight finish into a statement win, but the ending at Pitt will sit with Hokies fans for a while. John Love lined up for a 36-yard field goal as time expired, and when the kick missed, Virginia Tech was left with a loss despite a performance that gave it plenty to feel good about elsewhere.
Ethan Grunkemeyer posted a career-high 434 passing yards, a number that should have been enough to carry the evening into the win column. Instead, the final kick sparked the kind of debate that lingers after a one-score game, with some fans still wondering about whether it was truly good, while James Franklin declined to pin the result on the officials.
