Virginia Tech Lands Elite 2026 Quarterback in Live National Announcement

Virginia Tech lands a prized West Coast quarterback as Troy Huhn makes a high-profile commitment following a major coaching shake-up.

Virginia Tech Lands West Coast QB Troy Huhn - A Big Get for James Franklin’s First Class

Virginia Tech just made a major move on the recruiting trail, securing a commitment from one of the top uncommitted quarterbacks in the 2026 class. Troy Huhn, a 6-foot-4, 215-pound pocket passer out of Mission Hills High School in San Marcos, California, announced his decision live on CBS Sports, giving the Hokies their first quarterback pledge under new head coach James Franklin.

This is a big one - both literally and figuratively.

Huhn is a prototypical pocket quarterback with the kind of size and arm talent that jumps off the tape. He was previously committed to Penn State, but after Franklin’s departure from the Nittany Lions in October, Huhn reopened his recruitment. Now, he’s following the coach east, becoming the first signal-caller to jump on board Franklin’s rebuild in Blacksburg.

A Coast-to-Coast Battle

Huhn’s recruitment was a national affair. He held offers from a who’s who of college football - Arizona, Arizona State, Auburn, Florida State, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Ole Miss, Texas, and more. That’s a long list of programs that saw what Virginia Tech now hopes to unlock: a high-upside passer with the tools to lead a modern college offense.

While the recruiting services don’t all agree on exactly where Huhn ranks, there’s no doubt he’s a high-level prospect. ESPN is the highest on him, labeling him a four-star recruit, the No. 198 player in the country, the No. 10 quarterback nationally, and the No. 21 player in California. 247Sports and Rivals both have him as a three-star, but even then, he’s still one of the top quarterbacks in their rankings - 247Sports has him as the highest-rated three-star QB in the country.

And here’s the kicker: Huhn is ranked ahead of several quarterbacks already committed to blue-blood programs like Auburn, Miami, Washington, Clemson, Notre Dame and Ohio State. That’s not nothing.

A New Era Under Center

Huhn’s commitment marks the first quarterback addition of the Franklin era at Virginia Tech, and it couldn’t come at a more critical time. Earlier on Monday, three-star QB Cole Bergeron - who had been committed to the Hokies since August - backed off his pledge. Huhn’s decision immediately fills that void and, frankly, raises the ceiling for what this quarterback room could become over the next few years.

Franklin has always prioritized strong quarterback play, and Huhn fits the mold of the kind of passer who can thrive in a pro-style system with spread concepts. He’s got the frame, he’s got the arm, and he’s got the pedigree. Now, it’s about development - and opportunity.

Rare California Pipeline

Huhn also becomes a bit of a rarity in Virginia Tech’s recruiting history. He’s just the second player from California to commit to the Hokies since 2021, when cornerback DJ Harvey joined the program. Before that, the last Californian to sign with Tech was linebacker Jordan Trott - all the way back in 2001.

That’s a long drought, and Huhn’s commitment could signal a broader recruiting shift under Franklin, who’s no stranger to national recruiting battles. If the Hokies can continue to pull talent from the West Coast - especially at premium positions like quarterback - it could open doors that haven’t been accessible in years.

What’s Next

For now, Virginia Tech fans can breathe a little easier knowing they’ve got their quarterback of the future locked in. Huhn brings instant credibility to the class and gives Franklin a foundational piece to build around. The Hokies have work to do to climb back into national relevance, but this is the kind of win that helps get you there.

Big arm. Big frame.

Big-time commitment. Virginia Tech just got better.
