The Commonwealth Cup lands on Thanksgiving weekend again, and this year Virginia Tech gets the home date. The Hokies will host Virginia on Saturday, Nov. 28 at Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, with the start time still listed as TBD.
For fans looking to get in the door early, tickets are already available on StubHub. The current get-in price is $160.
It’s the latest chapter in an in-state ACC rivalry that rarely needs any extra fuel. Virginia enters as the defending Commonwealth Cup champion after snapping Virginia Tech’s four-year run, but the Hokies will have the edge of home field when the teams meet in Blacksburg.
Virginia’s schedule has already taken shape around that trip west. The Cavaliers opened with a 34-8 win over NC State on Aug. 29, followed by wins over Norfolk State, Delaware and Syracuse, before dropping games to West Virginia, Florida State, SMU, Duke and Wake Forest.
Their remaining regular-season games are listed against Cal on Nov. 14, North Carolina on Nov. 21 and Virginia Tech on Nov.
Virginia Tech’s path to the rivalry game has looked different, with several wins already on the board. The Hokies beat VMI, Old Dominion, Maryland, Boston College, Georgia Tech and Clemson, while falling to Pittsburgh and California. Their final stretch includes a Nov. 6 trip to SMU, then home games against Stanford and Miami before the Commonwealth Cup.
The full setup is simple: Virginia Tech hosts Virginia on Nov. 28, and the only thing still missing is the kickoff time.

Virginia Tech Faces A Run Game Test In Huge Trip To SMU
Virginia Tech heads to Dallas with plenty on the line, and the trip to Southern Methodist is about more than just another ACC road game. The Hokies are trying to strengthen their place in the conference picture and keep their bowl hopes moving in the right direction, which makes the matchup a useful measuring stick for where this team really stands as the season tightens.
A big part of that evaluation will be the run game, which has a better chance to look like itself again after the recent return of key offensive linemen Montavious Cunningham and Brody Meadows. Their presence gives Virginia Tech a chance to stabilize the front and lean into a ground attack that has been central to how the Hokies want to play, especially in a game where every possession could matter. Virginia Techs New Rotation Just Gave Hokies Fans Something To Watch
Virginia Techs win over Mercer was more than just a comfortable 96-67 result. It also offered a first look at a rotation tweak that gave the Hokies a different kind of balance, with Amani Hansberry settling in primarily at forward and turning in the kind of performance that can change how a lineup feels from top to bottom. Miles Heide helped stretch the floor, and the overall mix looked cleaner as Virginia Tech found a better rhythm offensively.
Tyler Johnson added another interesting layer after moving to a bench role, still playing with the kind of aggression and efficiency that can make him useful in shorter bursts. The bigger question now is how sustainable this new approach will be as the competition gets tougher, especially with the Hokies showing a willingness to lean less on early perimeter looks and more on the kind of interior pressure that can travel. Virginia Tech Faces A Huge ACC Test With Plenty On The Line
Virginia Tech heads to Dallas this week for a matchup that feels like more than just another ACC road trip. Under first-year coach James Franklin, the Hokies have put themselves in position to keep climbing, and the conversation around this one has centered on how Ethan Grunkemeyer handles the moment against an SMU team that has been tough to solve at home.
The staff predictions and analysis have pointed to the quarterbacks as a major hinge point, with Kevin Jennings on the other side and both defenses expected to have a say in how the game unfolds. It is the kind of conference test that can sharpen a season quickly, and for Virginia Tech, the real intrigue is whether this trip can turn into one of those results that changes how the rest of the ACC race looks.
