Virginia Tech’s fall camp arrives with plenty still unsettled, and the Hokies have a few key jobs up for grabs before the season takes shape. Three battles stand out most: running back, tight end and the defensive line.
At running back, Marcellous Hawkins and Jeffrey Overton Jr. look like the two names to know. Hawkins enters camp with the edge, but Overton made a strong late push after coming back from injury.
In the final two games of the season against Miami and Virginia, he totaled 120 yards on 6.67 yards per carry and scored a touchdown. That finish has created real buzz around what he might do in his first healthy season.
Still, the expectation is that Hawkins stays ahead. Overton should be in the mix, but Hawkins is projected to see more carries, with the workload likely split in a fairly even way.
Tight end is another spot that could go either direction. Virginia Tech added elite talent through the portal, all from Penn State, with Luke Reynolds highlighted as the top addition.
Benji Gosnell brings the most experience to the room, and the upcoming senior has 56 career catches for 564 yards and three touchdowns. Reynolds offers a different kind of threat, with 368 yards on 35 receptions and a touchdown.
The battle feels wide open, especially with the Hokies expected to rotate tight ends often and lean on 12 and 13 personnel throughout the season.
Up front, the defensive line picture may end up changing depending on how Curtis Jones Jr. is used. The West Virginia transfer is listed as a linebacker, but he has also seen time on the edge, even if never as a full-time starter. The expectation is that he’ll mostly line up at linebacker, which leaves Aycen Stevens, Mylachi Williams, Jason Abbey and Javion Hilson fighting for spots, with Cortez Harris and Eric Mensah also in the mix to climb the depth chart.
Of the three, the edge-rusher battle may be the most interesting because so much of it can shift depending on rotation and how Jones is deployed.

Carly Wilkes, a Glenvar High School product and former Furman standout, was signed by Virginias womens track and field and cross-country program, with the announcement coming Tuesday.
For a local athlete with ties to one of the regions better-known high school programs, the move adds another layer of interest for fans who follow recruiting and in-state talent. Virginia did not have to look far to find a runner with a track record at both the prep and college levels, and now Wilkes enters a new chapter with a program that clearly saw enough to make the addition official. ESPNs latest jersey-number exercise ended up giving Virginia Tech a nice little spotlight, with the network naming the best college football player ever to wear each number from 0-99. Two Hokies landed on the list, a reminder of how much star power the program has produced across different eras and positions.
Michael Vick took the No. 7 honor and Corey Moore was picked for No. 56, putting both in rare company in a ranking built to spark debate.
