Virginia Tech Faces A Real ACC Test After Its Clemson Statement

In a highly anticipated first clash, Virginia Tech and SMU, both holding impressive records and formidable talent, prepare to battle it out in a closely matched college football showdown.

Virginia Tech heads to SMU on Friday night with both teams sitting at 6-2, and this ACC matchup comes in with a little extra intrigue because it’s the first time these schools have ever met.

The Hokies enter off an upset win at Clemson on Oct. 24, a result that snapped a two-game skid and gave Virginia Tech a week off to reset. SMU, on the other hand, is trying to shake off an upset loss at Syracuse that ended a four-game winning streak.

Virginia Tech’s conference mark stands at 3-2, while SMU is 4-2 against ACC opponents. The Mustangs have been especially strong at home, where they’re a perfect 5-0 this season. Still, Virginia Tech has been stubborn all year and has not lost by more than five points in any game.

That makes this one feel tighter than the setting might suggest. SMU has been a tough out at home, but this is also the shortest spread the Mustangs have faced in their own building. They barely covered as 9.5-point favorites in a 10-point win over Virginia a few weeks ago.

The biggest name to watch is SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings, who has put together a strong senior season. He has thrown for 2,414 yards and 21 touchdowns, which puts him in the top 10 nationally in both categories.

Jennings has also cleaned things up after an uneven start. He has five interceptions on the year, but all of them came in his first four games. Over the last four contests, he has thrown nine touchdowns without an interception.

Home has been a much friendlier environment for Jennings, too. In five home games, he has 15 touchdowns and one interception, compared with six touchdowns and four interceptions in three road games.

Virginia Tech’s recent form and SMU’s home edge set up a game that could stay close deep into the night. The Hokies have already shown they can hang with strong competition, and the Mustangs are coming off a loss that gives the visitors a little momentum advantage in the matchup.

Virginia Tech Wrestling Showed Early Depth In A Strong Season Start

The 2026 Southeast Open at Roanoke Colleges Cregger Center gave Virginia Tech an early look at where its lineup stands as the 2026-27 wrestling season got underway. Nearly 30 programs were in the field, including Virginia and Washington and Lee, and the Hokies left with several wrestlers reaching the podium across two divisions, a solid opening snapshot for a team trying to establish depth right away.

Aaron Seidel was among the standouts for Virginia Tech, part of a day that showed the Hokies can spread success beyond just one or two weight classes. Roanoke Colleges Jonah Paulino also turned in a notable showing, and with so many schools represented, the tournament offered an early measuring stick for where Virginia Tech fits as the season begins to take shape. Virginia Tech Faces A Huge ACC Test With One Worry Looming

Virginia Tech comes out of its bye week with a chance to make a real statement in the ACC race when it meets SMU in a game that carries more weight than a typical November matchup. With Miami sitting atop the league without a loss and Wake Forest right behind with just one, the Hokies know this one matters for both the standings and their staying power in the conference picture.

SMU arrives with its own urgency after a loss to Syracuse, and the matchup sets up as one of those late-season games where the margin for error has already nearly disappeared. Virginia Tech also has a practical concern hanging over it after taking a beating up front this season, so the extra week off offered a chance to reset before a test that could shape how the rest of the ACC race looks. Virginia Techs Stanford Game Adds Another Big Test As Momentum Builds

Virginia Techs late-season stretch is taking shape with another notable ACC test on the horizon, as the Hokies are set to host Stanford on Saturday, Nov. 14. The matchup comes with the kind of timing that can keep a teams momentum rolling, especially with Virginia Tech still working through a key Week 10 meeting against SMU on Nov. 6 before turning the page to the Cardinal.

Stanfords ACC results have been uneven, with recent wins and losses giving the Hokies a clear sense that this one will still demand attention despite the distance between the programs. For Virginia Tech, the bigger picture is about keeping its footing in November and handling the next challenge cleanly, even as the schedule continues to tighten and the stakes keep rising.
