Virginia Schedule Announce Sparks Excitement

Notre Dame strengthens its 2027 schedule by adding a formidable challenge against Virginia, following Georgia Tech's unexpected withdrawal.

Notre Dame’s 2027 schedule got a new look this week, and the Irish wound up with a tougher replacement after Georgia Tech backed out of its game.

Virginia announced Wednesday that it will be Notre Dame’s 12th opponent in 2027, with the Cavaliers set to host the Irish at Scott Stadium in Charlottesville, Va. The date has not been announced.

The change comes after Georgia Tech said earlier this month it would no longer travel to Notre Dame in 2027 because of ACC scheduling adjustments. Notre Dame had already lined up 12 opponents for that season, so the Irish needed a new matchup to fill the slot.

The reshuffling fits into a broader conference shift. Beginning in 2027, 16 of the ACC’s 17 teams will play a nine-game league schedule, and all 17 schools will be required to play 10 Power 4 opponents.

Notre Dame has had a scheduling arrangement with the ACC for years, even though it is only a full member in several other sports, including baseball and basketball. There is still some movement left on the Irish’s 2027 slate.

A home game against BYU does not yet have a kickoff date, and the road games against Virginia and Duke are also still unresolved. As it stands, Notre Dame is scheduled for six home games, five road games and one neutral-site game in Charlotte, N.C., against Wake Forest.

The Irish and Cavaliers do not meet often, despite that ACC relationship. Notre Dame has won all five games in the series.

The first came in the 1989 Kickoff Classic in East Rutherford, N.J. The other four meetings were in 2015, 2019, 2021 and 2024, with Notre Dame winning the most recent matchup 35-14.

On paper, the switch from Georgia Tech to Virginia makes the 2027 slate stronger. Virginia finished 11-3 and led the ACC standings in the regular season last year. This season, the Cavaliers are 3-1 and 1-0 in conference play, while Georgia Tech appears to have slipped after the departure of dual-threat quarterback Haynes King.

Virginia Techs Pitt Uniform Reveal Carries A Familiar Unbeaten Vibe

Virginia Tech has settled on a familiar look for its Week 5 matchup with Pitt, unveiling a maroon-helmet, maroon-jersey, white-pants combination for the Oct. 2 game at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN. It is a clean, traditional set the Hokies have turned to often over the years, and it arrives with the sort of old-school feel that tends to suit a night game in Blacksburg.

The uniform choice adds another layer of familiarity to a meeting that already has a decent amount of history attached to it, and the Hokies will once again get a chance to lean into one of their standard home looks. Whether the color combo brings any extra edge on the field is another matter, but it does give the game a polished backdrop as Virginia Tech and Pitt line up under the lights. [Read more 🡒]

Pitt Brings One ACC Test Virginia Tech Can Finally Exploit

Pitts first road trip of the 2026 season now arrives with plenty riding on it, and Virginia Tech gets the kind of ACC matchup that can tell the Hokies a lot about where they really stand. Both teams are undefeated and tied for first in the conference, which gives Saturdays meeting in Blacksburg a little extra weight even before kickoff, especially with Pitt bringing an offense that has looked far more convincing against non-Power Four opponents than it has in the tougher games on its schedule.

For Virginia Tech, that split matters because it suggests a clear opening if the Hokies can force Pitt into a more ordinary rhythm away from home. Quarterback Mason Heintschel, running back Damon Ferguson Jr. and wide receiver Cataurus Hicks remain the names to track, but there is also some uncertainty around the availability of running back Ja'Kyrian Turner and other receivers, which could shape how much explosiveness Pitt brings with it. In a game where both records still look perfect, the details may matter just as much as the standings. [Read more 🡒]

Virginia Tech's Fast Start Faces Its Biggest Test Yet Against Pitt

Four games into James Franklins tenure at Virginia Tech, the Hokies have yet to give back a win, and the early stretch has offered a little of everything. Theyve shown they can respond when games turn uneasy, including a second-half rally against Boston College, and they also handled a nonconference test at Maryland, signs that the programs coaching changes and strategic tweaks are already having an effect.

Pitt now looms as the clearest measuring stick yet for how real this start might be. Virginia Tech has looked more composed and resilient than it has in recent seasons, but the next step is proving it can keep that momentum against a team that will ask different questions than the first four did, especially after the Hokies have already shown they can survive pressure and still find a way to win.
