Virginia Tech’s perfect start under James Franklin ended Friday night against Pitt, but the finish at Lane Stadium left plenty of people arguing about the call that decided it.
With time expired in the fourth quarter, Hokies kicker John Love lined up for a 36-yard attempt to win it. The kick missed, and the game was over. Still, plenty of fans came away convinced the officials got it wrong, and even Virginia Tech’s sideline didn’t sound fully certain in the moment.
“From my angle, I couldn’t tell you one way or another,” Franklin told reporters postgame.
The reaction online came fast. “If the ball ever goes directly over the goal post it’s no good but from that angle it seems like he snuck it in,” one fan said.
“Are we sure this didn’t go through the uprights? I think it did,” a second fan commented.
“Virginia tech just got robbed lmao the kick was clearly good .. no review on this is diabolical,” a third fan declared “I honestly thought he made it,” another person said.
There is one angle that appears to support the officials’ ruling, though plenty of fans weren’t interested in that view.
Virginia Tech, for its part, didn’t lean into blaming the refs. Franklin pointed instead to the broader game and the missed chances that put the Hokies in that spot in the first place.
“We had a chance to win it at the end,” Franklin said postgame. “Everyone is going to focus on the last play. This isn’t coachspeak, but we’re going to watch this tape and there are going to be 20 plays that we could have made to put us in a better position and not be in that situation at the end.”
There was at least one bright spot for the Hokies: Ethan Grunkemeyer threw for a career-high 434 yards. Virginia Tech will try to carry that forward into Week 6, when it faces Cal.

Virginia Tech Let A Winnable Pitt Game Slip Away For One Reason
Virginia Tech had a chance to turn a messy afternoon at Lane Stadium into a statement win, but instead the Hokies let a winnable game against Pitt slip away in familiar fashion. Even while outgaining the Panthers in total yards, Virginia Tech kept undercutting itself with a turnover-prone offense and too many mistakes in critical spots, and the margin for error vanished as the game tightened late.
John Love had a 36-yard field goal try to force the issue as time expired, but the kick missed and Pitt escaped with a 35-33 win. For the Hokies, the frustration went beyond one final snap. Four turnovers and eight penalties left too much room for the Panthers to stay alive, and it turned a game Virginia Tech had every reason to control into another hard-luck loss. [Read more 🡒]
Virginia Tech's Next Line Says Plenty After That Brutal Pitt Loss
Virginia Tech is trying to turn the page quickly after a heartbreaking 35-33 loss to Pitt, one that featured Ethan Grunkemeyers career-high 434 passing yards and still ended with the Hokies empty-handed. The numbers from that afternoon suggested an offense that can push defenses around, but the result was a reminder that strong production does not always translate into a win when a game tightens late.
The next chance to respond comes Oct. 10 against California, where Virginia Tech is listed as a 10.5-point favorite by FanDuel Sportsbook. It is the kind of line that says plenty about the expectations surrounding this matchup, and for a Hokies team still carrying the sting of the Pitt game, the focus now shifts to whether it can back that status up on ACC Network.
