Virginia Tech's football program is gearing up for a promising new chapter, with the offensive line taking center stage in the team's rebuilding efforts. While the quarterback often grabs the spotlight, it's the offensive line that truly anchors the team’s success.
The Hokies have faced challenges in this area, cycling through four coaches in six years. But with the arrival of new head coach James Franklin, there's renewed hope that offensive line coach Matt Moore can bring stability and consistency.
Moore, known for his knack in developing talent, has been a key holdover from the previous coaching staff. He's tackled tougher situations in his career and is now tasked with revitalizing the Hokies' line.
To bolster the unit, Moore has successfully recruited four players from the Transfer Portal and seven promising high school prospects. This influx of talent is crucial, especially with only one starter, Tomas Rimac, departing.
Returning starters Layth Ghannam, Kyle Altuner, Montavious Cunningham, and Johnny Garrett provide a solid foundation to build upon.
The new additions include transfers Michael Troutman III from Penn State, Logan Howland from Oklahoma, Justin Bell from Michigan State, and Justin Terry from Ohio State. These players bring both size and experience, which will be vital in shoring up the line. The high school recruits, including Benjamin Eziuka and Roseby Lubintus, add youthful potential and depth.
During an offseason media session, Moore expressed optimism about the upcoming season. "Our numbers are going to be much more competitive," he shared, highlighting the immediate impact of the new recruits.
Injuries and inexperience plagued the team last year, leading to inconsistent performances. However, Moore is confident that a deeper rotation will help the Hokies handle adversity better this time around.
Reflecting on last season, Moore noted the challenges of relying on inexperienced players. "We struggled once we got past the first five or six last year," he explained.
But with a healthier and more seasoned group returning, along with the new recruits, the competition for spots is heating up. "It's going to be very, very competitive," Moore emphasized, indicating a positive shift in the team's dynamics.
Looking ahead, Moore is encouraged by the progress his unit has made. "We're definitely heading in that direction," he stated, noting that the players now have a clearer understanding of the system. With a blend of returning talent and new blood, Virginia Tech's offensive line is poised to make significant strides, setting the stage for a potentially exciting season.
