The Virginia Tech women's basketball team saw their season come to an end with a tough 70-60 loss to the Oregon Ducks in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Austin, Texas. The Lady Hokies faced a formidable opponent in Oregon, who seized control early with a 12-0 run, setting the tone for a 22-11 lead after the first quarter.
Despite the early setback, Virginia Tech showed resilience in the second quarter, tightening their defense and holding the Ducks to just 13 points. Heading into halftime, the Hokies had narrowed the gap to 35-29, keeping their hopes alive.
The third quarter began with promise as Carys Baker scored to bring the game to 35-31. However, Oregon responded with an 18-0 run that put the game out of reach. The Ducks' shooting was on point, and the Hokies struggled to find their rhythm, as Oregon extended their lead to 61-40.
Virginia Tech's shooting woes were evident, hitting just 31.8% from the field compared to Oregon's 48%. Despite the struggles, Baker delivered an outstanding performance, leading the Hokies with 21 points and 14 rebounds, marking her second double-double of the season and setting a new career-high in rebounds.
Unfortunately, Carleigh Wenzel couldn't find her form, making only two of 12 shots and finishing with nine points. Baker was the sole Hokie to reach double figures.
While the loss was a bitter pill to swallow, it doesn't overshadow the remarkable season the Hokies had under second-year head coach Megan Duffy. After the departure of Kenny Brooks, who left a significant legacy, Duffy's leadership has been a breath of fresh air. The team exceeded expectations last year, and their 23-10 finish this season is a testament to their growth.
Looking ahead, the future is bright for Virginia Tech. With several key players returning, a promising recruiting class, and the anticipated return of freshman guard Kate Sears, who missed this season due to injury, the Hokies are poised for continued success.
