James Franklin Is Creating Real 757 Buzz Around Virginia Tech

James Franklin and Virginia Tech are creating a buzz among high school football's rising stars, drawing attention from top recruits who are impressed with the program's dynamic culture.

NORFOLK, Va. - The 757 Colts’ media night had the look of a big-time recruiting event before the first conversation even started.

Chicho’s was jammed with royal blue and white on Tuesday night, with a DJ near the bar, a custom backdrop on stage and a crowd that included guests watching the Switzerland-Colombia penalty shootout. When 2029 offensive lineman Jaylen Speller stepped inside, the organizers cracked, "Here comes another 10+ offers," a nod to just how much attention the towering prospect draws.

The event brought together several of the country’s top young players, many of whom were back in the area this summer before heading to IMG Academy for the upcoming season. Among the standouts were 2028 linebacker Andre Alexander, 2028 wide receiver Quincy Gilmer, 2028 offensive lineman Nijal Thigpen, 2028 defensive lineman Lincoln Halliday, 2029 quarterback Lord Malik Heru and 2029 offensive tackle Jaylen Speller.

But the biggest thread running through the night wasn’t just the talent in the room. It was Virginia Tech, and more specifically, James Franklin.

In conversations with several national-level recruits, the Hokies kept coming up. Virginia Tech has been on a recruiting surge over the past nine months, and that momentum appears to be carrying into the summer. Franklin’s staff has already offered each of the top prospects in attendance, and many of them took unofficial visits to Blacksburg this spring.

What stood out most was the consistency in how they described the program. The culture, the environment and the expectations around Franklin’s Hokies were all mentioned again and again, making Virginia Tech one of the central storylines of the night.

Virginia Tech's 2027 Class Is Already Sending A Message About The Rebuild

Virginia Techs 2027 recruiting class is already looking like a statement piece in the middle of a rebuild, with major services slotting it inside the national top 20 and third in the ACC. The group is loaded with 13 four-star recruits, a sign that the staff has not just been filling spots but building around prospects it believes can help reshape the roster.

What makes the start even more interesting is that the Hokies are not done yet. The staff is expected to stay selective as it looks for a few more additions, especially in the secondary, and the programs momentum plus its regional relationships give this class a real chance to keep climbing before the Early Signing Period. If Virginia Tech can land the right targets, this group could end up looking even stronger than it does now. [Read more 🡒]
