The college softball world is mourning the sudden death of Gabriella Munoz, a 19-year-old sophomore from Livingstone College whose loss has shaken the campus and the wider athletic community.
Livingstone College confirmed the news in a statement, saying, “It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that Livingstone College shares the passing of our beloved student-athlete, Gabriella Munoz, a rising junior from Katy, Texas, and a cherished member of the Blue Bear softball family,”
The Harris County Institute of Forensic Science in Houston recorded her death on July 9. An official report on the cause of death is still pending.
School officials also pushed back against false reports that had begun circulating online, making clear that Munoz was not on campus when she died. University President Anthony J.
Davis condemned those rumors as the college dealt with the aftermath of the loss. The administration is now focused on supporting students, faculty members and teammates, with grief counselors available for anyone affected.
Munoz wore No. 55 for the Division II program and played as a sophomore utility player and pitcher. Last season, she appeared in 27 games and made one start for Livingstone.
Her impact reached well beyond the field. Munoz posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in both semesters of her sophomore year and earned a Board of Trustees Scholarship award for her academic work.
Head coach Steve Wallace called her “a complete joy to instruct every day,” and said her absence will be felt across the athletic department.
