Virginia Tech got one name onto the ACC’s preseason all-league team Thursday, with defensive lineman Kemari Copeland earning the Hokies’ lone selection.
Copeland did not receive any votes for ACC Preseason Player of the Year, an honor that went to Miami quarterback Darian Mensah. The vote totals were released along with the preseason team.
The result keeps a recent pattern intact for Virginia Tech in the 17-team ACC. In three years, the Hokies have placed two players on the preseason All-ACC team, and both came in 2024 on defense: defensive tackle Aeneas Peebles and cornerback Dorian Strong. Virginia Tech finished 7-6 overall and 4-4 in ACC play that season before losing to Minnesota in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.
A year ago, the Hokies were shut out of the preseason team entirely. That season ended at 3-9 overall and 2-6 in the ACC, and then-head coach Brent Pry was fired three games into the year.
After the season, Copeland and defensive tackle Kody Huisman were Virginia Tech’s only All-ACC honorees, with Copeland landing on the Third Team and Huisman earning Honorable Mention. Huisman later signed with the NFL’s Buffalo Bills as a UDFA.
Virginia Tech has also had players show up in the ACC Preseason Player of the Year voting four times in the 17-team era, but none has won the award. In 2024, quarterback Kyron Drones finished No. 4 with 13 votes, running back Bhayshul Tuten was No. 10 with two votes, and edge rusher Antwaun Powell-Ryland was No. 11 with one vote. Miami quarterback Cam Ward won that preseason award and later took ACC Player of the Year while making First-Team All-ACC.
Last year, Clemson quarterback Cade Klubnik was the runaway preseason choice with 146 votes, while eventual ACC Player of the Year Haynes King was the nearest challenger with nine. Drones tied for fourth with Miami quarterback Carson Beck, each drawing four first-place votes. Neither Klubnik nor Drones ended up on any of the All-ACC teams.
Virginia Tech opens its 2026 season at home against VMI on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET, and the game will air on the ACC Network.

The ACCs 2026 preseason poll offered a pretty clear snapshot of where Virginia Tech sits heading into the new year, and it is not exactly in the leagues upper tier. The Hokies were slotted eighth in the 17-team field, a middle-of-the-pack placement that reflects both the uncertainty around the program and the expectations that come with a fresh start under new head coach James Franklin.
For Virginia Tech, the ranking is a reminder of how much ground still needs to be made up after a three-win 2025 season. Miami drew most of the first-place votes, with Florida State and Stanford also getting some support, while the Hokies now have to turn outside perception into something sturdier once the 2026 season gets going.
