Ryan Odom is gearing up for a showdown as NC State prepares to face off against the 11th-ranked Virginia Cavaliers tonight. With the Cavaliers riding an impressive eight-game winning streak and boasting a formidable 13-1 record at John Paul Jones Arena, Odom and his squad know they have their work cut out for them.
NC State has experienced a rollercoaster of results recently, including a dominant victory over UNC, a narrow loss to Miami, a tough defeat at Louisville, and a solid win against Virginia Tech. The last time these two teams met, Virginia cruised to a comfortable victory in Raleigh, but Odom is well aware that tonight's game could unfold differently.
“They’re going to be ready to play,” Odom emphasized. “They remember the last game, and they’ll be motivated to perform well here at JPJ. We’ve got to be ready for the challenge.”
While the Cavaliers have been clicking on all cylinders, NC State will need to contend with Virginia's strong perimeter shooting, rebounding prowess, and physical defense. Will Wade, NC State's coach, acknowledges the monumental task ahead but remains hopeful.
“Virginia is playing great, got great personnel,” Wade noted. “Their physicality is a big challenge for us. We’ll need to start better than we did in the first game.”
Virginia's roster features impressive length with 7-foot shot-blockers Ugonna Onyenso and Johann Grünloh. Meanwhile, NC State relies on key players like Darrion Williams and Qadir Copeland, who have settled into their roles as primary ballhandlers, bringing more control to the offense.
“Everything’s in theory until we see if we can do it [tonight],” Wade said. “We have to match their physicality. They’re one of the best offensive rebounding teams, and that’s an area we’ve struggled with.”
Virginia's lineup has also evolved since their last encounter. Sharpshooter Jacari White, who missed the first game due to injury, is back and made a significant impact in their recent win over Miami. Additionally, Chance Mallory has emerged as a dynamic player, bringing energy and swagger to the team.
Mallory, known for his aggressive play, recently delivered a clutch performance against Miami, showcasing his ability to impact the game on both ends of the floor.
“It’s going to be tough sledding,” Wade admitted about the trip to Charlottesville. “They’re the best defensive team in the league. We need to be better defensively and get more stops.”
As NC State heads into this pivotal matchup, the stakes are high, and both teams will be eager to make their mark in the ACC. Fans can expect a battle of wits and wills as these two teams collide on the court.
