Virginia men’s basketball opens the 2026-27 season tonight at John Paul Jones Arena against Drexel, and the Cavaliers are expected to roll. The final margin may not be much of a mystery, but that doesn’t mean the game is without intrigue.
For Ryan Odom’s staff, this is the kind of night that can still reveal something useful. Virginia has the talent to be one of the best teams in college basketball, but the bigger question is how all of those pieces fit together.
That makes tonight a chance to experiment, especially with lineups. Odom could go small, go big, load up on shooters, or even lean into an all-defensive group.
There are plenty of combinations to explore.
That also puts a spotlight on Silas Barksdale and Martin Carrere. Even if their minutes aren’t steady once the season settles in, this is the sort of game where they can be tested in different roles and situations.
Another name to watch is Gertrude, who emerged in the preseason as someone who looked ready to start. He shot the ball efficiently from deep, held up on defense and even looked comfortable running the offense.
If that carries over, it could raise Virginia’s ceiling in a real way. With the Cavaliers heavily favored - their chances of winning should never dip below 99% - Gertrude should get plenty of run tonight.
The question is what he does with it.
Then there’s Ibe, the 7-foot-1, 248-pound freshman who arrives with a massive frame and a clear defensive job description. Against a Drexel team that is struggling, he has a chance to make an immediate impression in the paint.
Virginia also has a big void to fill after NBA-bound Ugonna Onyenso anchored the defense late last season. If Ibe can bring any offense, that would be a bonus.
But the main thing Odom will want to learn is whether he can be an elite shot-blocker right away.
Once Virginia builds a comfortable lead, Johann Grunloh, Thijs De Ridder and the other core veterans should head to the bench early. That should open the door for the bench group and the underclassmen to take center stage for the rest of the night.

Virginia Opened Strong But One Rotation Question Already Stands Out
Virginia opened its 2026-27 season with a convincing 87-45 win over Maryland-Eastern Shore, and the early signs were encouraging. Kymora Johnson set the tone with 21 points, while Breona Hurd gave the Cavaliers a strong interior presence with a double-double, helping Virginia look sharp on both ends in a game that never felt in doubt for long.
Still, even in a comfortable opener, the rotation picture deserves a closer look. Virginia had plenty of production across the roster, but the way players were used and where the minutes settled could matter as the schedule gets tougher, especially for a team trying to balance proven veterans with the right mix around them. Virginias Final Three Games Could Change More Than Just The Record
Virginias season has reached the point where every remaining game carries more than just bowl implications. After a significant loss to Wake Forest dropped the Cavaliers to 4-5, they head into a bye week with three games left and a roster still dealing with injuries to key starters. Coach Tony Elliott has continued to stand by quarterback Beau Pribula through the rough stretch, but the margin for comfort around the offense has narrowed as the losses pile up.
The bigger picture is starting to matter just as much as the weekly results. The final stretch will help shape how the program is judged going into the offseason, especially with the staff structure already in place and the pressure of overall success hanging over future decisions. Virginia still has time to steady itself, but the next few weeks could end up influencing far more than the final record. [Read more 🡒]
