Week one has already shuffled the ACC picture, and Virginia’s opening win over NC State suddenly looks even better.
With the Cavaliers set to face Norfolk State in game week, the league has mostly gotten one game under its belt, and the results have been all over the place. Virginia’s blowout of NC State stands out as one of the conference’s strongest wins when you measure it against the level of competition.
The biggest early question around the league is what to make of the teams that entered the season with contender talk and then came out flat. Cal, Clemson and NC State were all expected to sit near the top tier of the conference, but each opened in ugly fashion, especially on defense.
Clemson and NC State at least have the built-in excuse of facing No. 11 LSU and Virginia, respectively.
Both were expected to compete more than they did, but the opponents were simply better. Cal, though, took the hardest hit to its early reputation.
The Golden Bears lost by three touchdowns at home to an unproven UCLA team, and the issues showed up everywhere. Star quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele threw two interceptions, and new coach Tosh Lupoi’s defense was pushed around at the line of scrimmage.
That leaves Cal with real work to do if it wants to stay in the ACC contender conversation instead of sliding into the middle of the pack.
Then there are the teams that scheduled what looked like automatic wins and got them. Syracuse, Pitt, Wake Forest and Virginia Tech all handled mid-major or FCS opponents, and those games were so lopsided that there’s not much meaningful evaluation to be done. Still, some of those “free win” results came with warning signs.
Wake Forest allowed 16 points against a middling Akron team. Florida State was tied with New Mexico State in the third quarter.
Duke’s offense managed only 17 points against Tulane. The Demon Deacons, Seminoles and Blue Devils all have some issues to clean up before conference play starts.
Syracuse and Virginia Tech looked the part in their routs, but the real test comes when those teams face actual Power Four competition. That’s where the questions get answered.
And for Virginia, the early read is simple: the path has opened up. NC State, Cal and Florida State once looked like three of the four toughest games on the Cavaliers’ schedule.
That no longer feels true. Virginia handled the Wolfpack decisively, and the other two teams in that group look merely average right now.
There is a real chance the Cavaliers can run the table at 11-1.

The lower half of the Top 25 also has some new interest for fans tracking the statewide picture, with Saint Michael the Archangel and Bethel landing in the rankings at No. 23 and No. 24, respectively. Saturday should offer Virginia its most manageable test of the early season, with an FCS opponent coming off a poor year and the Cavaliers expected to control the game from the start. Because of that lopsided setup, most starters are likely to be on the field for only a few drives, which turns the afternoon into something more valuable than a routine tune-up for the players sitting behind them.
That is where the real interest lies for the Cavaliers. The backups and reserves should get extended work, and for a few of them, this is a chance to show they belong in a bigger role going forward.
