Ohio State added a major piece for the future on the quarterback front, landing Christopher Vargas, the No. 1-ranked signal-caller in the 2028 class.
According to Hayes Fawcett of Rivals.com, Vargas committed to the Buckeyes and picked Ohio State over Oregon, Virginia Tech and other programs. The 6-foot-4 quarterback from Danvers, Mass. plays at St. John’s Prep in Massachusetts.
Vargas pointed to the fit with Ohio State’s staff and program when explaining why he chose the Buckeyes.
"Just the coaching staff and the place they're at, the culture, they have everything that is great for me and the right fit for me," Vargas said of his decision, via Rivals.com's Steve Wiltfong. "I think Ohio State is the place that can develop me the best."
He also singled out Ryan Day’s approach to coaching quarterbacks.
"I think it's because of the mindset he brings to the game," Vargas added. "It's not just throw you in there; you have to go play under fire. He develops you into that best person and best player you want to be."
Day’s track record is hard to miss. Since taking over as the lone offensive coordinator in 2018, he has helped shape Dwayne Haskins into a first-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, worked with Justin Fields during the 2019 season before Fields became a first-round pick in 2021, and guided C.J. Stroud to being selected No. 2 overall by the Houston Texans.
He also won a national championship with Will Howard at quarterback in 2024, and Howard went on to become a sixth-round pick by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025.
Day is currently working to turn Julian Sayin into a first-round pick next April, while Tavien St. Clair is expected to take over as the starting quarterback next season. Vargas now joins that pipeline, and he could be the most gifted quarterback Day gets his hands on yet.
He is still two seasons away from arriving in Columbus, but Ohio State may already have its next big quarterback bet in place.
