Virginia’s margin for error is thin, and the Blue Devils are coming at the Cavaliers with all kinds of pressure attached. After a blistering start, Virginia’s offense has slid into plain old mediocrity, and now the path back into the ACC picture runs through Duke.
That makes this a week for a few key names to matter more than ever. Virginia needs answers from its quarterback, its linebacker leader and a wideout who should be back in the mix because of injuries around him.
Start with Pribula, who has not looked like the player Virginia needs him to be. Tony Elliott said Pribula has done everything the coaching staff has asked him to do.
That creates a tough picture, because if Elliott is right, then the problem runs deeper than just one player. Still, the results have been ugly enough to demand change somewhere.
Virginia has gone under 300 yards of offense in three straight games, something it had not done since 2009.
Pribula has also left plays on the field. He has taken sacks instead of getting rid of the ball and has missed several throws.
Virginia cannot afford another so-so outing at quarterback. If this offense is going to find life against Duke, Pribula has to deliver big plays.
The deep strike to Da'Shawn Martin against Syracuse may have been the difference between a 3-4 team and something better.
On the other side of the ball, Kam Robinson is still waiting for the kind of game that turns into a headline. Elliott thinks that moment could be close.
Robinson was coming back from a major injury and also learning how to handle the defensive communication duties after James Jackson. That has made his adjustment especially tricky.
But seven weeks into the season, Virginia needs more from him. The Cavaliers are looking for a sack, a turnover, something that swings the game. They also need better work in run defense, because Robinson has had a few wrong-angle plays already, and that would be a dangerous habit against Nate Sheppard.
Then there’s Gibson, who may be in line for another chance to help an offense that badly needs it. He beat Martin for the final starting receiver spot early on, but lost that role a few weeks later.
His season numbers have not helped his case: eight catches, 103 yards and two touchdowns, with both scores coming against Norfolk State. He still has not had a game with three receptions or more than 36 yards.
This week, though, Rico Flores Jr. and likely Kam Courtney are out, which should push Gibson back into the starting lineup. Virginia needs that to mean something. Pribula needs receivers who can finish catches and separate downfield, and Gibson has a chance to be part of the fix.

Virginia Gets Another Shot At Duke With A Bigger Problem Looming
Virginia gets another crack at Duke on Saturday at Scott Stadium, and this one comes with the kind of familiarity that can cut both ways. It will be the third meeting between the programs in 11 months, and while both rosters have changed since last season, there is still plenty of film and memory for Virginias staff to sort through as it prepares for another run at a familiar opponent.
The Cavaliers also have to account for a Duke offense that still leans on Nate Sheppard, one of the most dangerous playmakers in the country. Virginias coaches have talked this week about the ways the teams have changed and the ways they have not, which is what makes this matchup tricky: the faces are different, but the challenge remains awfully recognizable. Virginia Secondary Takes Another Hit Before Pivotal Duke Game
Virginia heads into its ACC matchup with Duke already shorthanded, and the secondary is the biggest concern. The Cavaliers will be without free safety Ethan Minter and 19 other players for Saturdays game, leaving a defensive backfield that is already stretched thin with multiple names either out or questionable, including starting cornerback Omillio Agard.
The trouble doesnt stop there, either, with strong safety Brandyn Hillman among the key defenders dealing with an ankle issue as Virginia tries to patch together the back end of its defense. Duke has its own injury list to manage, but for the Cavaliers the timing is especially difficult, with the matchup carrying real weight and little margin for a depleted secondary to absorb another hit. Tony Elliott Just Put Virginia's Biggest Midseason Problem In Focus
Seven weeks into the 2026 season, Tony Elliott is looking at a Virginia team that has hit a rough patch on both sides of the ball. The defense has struggled to find consistency, and the offense has lost some of the rhythm it showed earlier in the year, leaving the Cavaliers searching for steadier production as the schedule has worn on.
Pribulas recent drop-off has become part of that larger conversation, even if Elliott is not pinning the slide on the quarterback alone. The run game has also failed to give the offense much cover in recent losses, while linebacker Robinsons return from injury has added another layer to the defenses uneven stretch, with Virginia still waiting for him to look fully like himself again.
