The ACC has already mapped out Virginia’s 2027 conference slate, but one game still sits in the mystery column.
Under the scheduling setup that started this season, most league teams will play nine ACC games and at least one Power Four non-conference opponent, while Clemson is the lone exception with eight league games and at least two Power Four non-conference games. The conference says the structure is designed to push more marquee matchups and improve the overall quality of the league’s schedule. As ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips put it in a news release, “By continuing to ensure that every team plays a minimum of 10 Power Four opponents, this model reinforces the collective strength of ACC Football, supports competitive balance across our 17 programs, and prepares our teams to compete at the highest level nationally,”
For Virginia, the ACC portion is already set. Louisville, SMU, Pittsburgh, and Virginia Tech are coming to Scott Stadium, while the Hoos will travel to Boston College, Georgia Tech, Miami, North Carolina, and Stanford.
UVA also already has two non-conference dates on the books for 2027: Arkansas State on Aug. 28 and William & Mary on Oct. 16.
The rest of the dates will be announced later.
That leaves one final opening, and ACC rules say it has to be filled by a Power Four opponent. It could be another home game, which would give Virginia seven at Scott Stadium, though a neutral-site setup is also possible. That matters because the Hoos only had six home games scheduled this season before the NC State game was moved from Brazil to Charlottesville.
So who’s left?
A look through the Big Ten, SEC, and Big 12 futures narrows the field quickly. In the Big Ten, several teams are already spoken for with other Power Four games on their schedules, including Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Michigan, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Purdue, Rutgers, UCLA, Washington, and Wisconsin.
Indiana is off the board because it canceled its previously scheduled series with Virginia in 2027 and 2028, and Nebraska and Oregon are full as well. That leaves USC as one of the few Big Ten possibilities.
The SEC picture is even tighter. Alabama, Mississippi State, Missouri, and Texas are already matched with other big-conference opponents, and the rest of the league’s teams listed in the source all have Power Four games lined up too.
That means, at least for now, no SEC team looks available. Virginia also already has future games scheduled against Vanderbilt in 2028 and 2031, so the Commodores wouldn’t be in the mix anyway.
Georgia Tech shows up on two SEC schedules, Georgia and Tennessee, which adds to an already difficult path for the Yellow Jackets.
The Big 12 doesn’t offer many clean options either. Arizona State, Baylor, Colorado, Houston, Iowa State, and Oklahoma State are already occupied with other Power Four games.
Arizona, BYU, Cincinnati, Kansas, Kansas State, UCF, and Utah also have bigger-conference matchups scheduled. That leaves TCU, Texas Tech, and West Virginia, but TCU’s schedule is full and West Virginia is full too.
By the end of the search, the list has been whittled down to Southern Cal and Texas Tech as the likeliest candidates for Virginia’s 12th game.
USC already has seven home games scheduled, which makes the Trojans workable. But they also have conference road trips to Ohio State and Maryland, so a Virginia-USC matchup would mean another long haul.
Texas Tech, meanwhile, has Arkansas-Pine Bluff and New Mexico at home, but only six home games overall because of five Big 12 road dates. That opens the door for either a home game or something more creative.
A neutral-site game is very much in play, and Nashville is one possibility worth watching. The Music City Kickoff in Nashville this season featured Mississippi and Louisville, while the Aflac Kickoff Game in Atlanta had Baylor and Auburn.
Both are Labor Day weekend events, and neither has announced its 2027 teams yet. Virginia has experience working with Nashville organizers, too, after last season’s Virginia vs.
Ohio State hoops game. The Hoos were also supposed to play Georgia in an Atlanta kickoff game in 2020 before the pandemic wiped it out.
If you’re making a guess, Virginia vs. Texas Tech in Nashville makes plenty of sense.
It would leave both teams with six home games while helping balance out the payout. And it would also bring back the only previous meeting between the schools, the 2007 Gator Bowl, which Texas Tech won 31-28.
