Virginia Let Another Costly Problem Ruin A Rivalry Match

In a commanding performance, Duke shattered Virginia's defenses for a decisive 3-0 victory, taking the lead in the historic series.

Virginia’s night in Durham turned grim long before the final whistle, and the damage started with a pair of first-half Duke goals that left the Cavaliers chasing the game short-handed.

The Blue Devils beat Virginia 3-0 on Friday at Koskinen Stadium, handing the Cavaliers their first shutout loss of the season. Virginia finished the match down to nine men after a second yellow card to Isaac Mwakutuya just before halftime and a straight red to Chase Duke in the closing minute.

Virginia opened with some promise, and Marco Dos Santos helped create an early chance that put Duke under pressure. But the Blue Devils found the breakthrough in the 19th minute when Arbib finished off a setup from Ottley. Duke doubled its lead in the 38th minute, with Ottley scoring off a Congleton assist.

The Cavaliers spent the entire second half with 10 men, and Duke made that advantage count in the 74th minute. Jonah Wolf scored on a free kick just outside the Virginia penalty area to push the margin to 3-0.

Virginia finished with six shots to Duke’s 14, while Caleb Tunks made six saves in goal. Duke also held the edge in corners, 7-3.

The result dropped Virginia to 7-6-1 overall and 3-3-0 in ACC play. Duke improved to 7-8-0 and 1-5-0. The Cavaliers also fell to 43-42-11 in the all-time series with Duke.

The red cards added to a growing problem for UVA, which was shown its fifth and sixth red cards of the season, the most in NCAA Division I.

Virginia returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 24, at Syracuse. Kickoff from SU Soccer Stadium is set for 1 p.m. on ACC Network Extra (ACCNX).

Virginias Bowl Path Just Got Tougher After Another Offensive Letdown

Virginias offense never found much rhythm in its recent loss to SMU, and the result left the Cavaliers with a much narrower margin for error as they chase bowl eligibility. They scored only one touchdown in the game, and the problems were even more apparent after halftime, when Virginia managed just three points and could not keep pace once the game tightened.

Now the path gets harder with five games left and two wins still needed to get to bowl eligibility. For a team that has already had too many uneven stretches on offense, the next stretch will demand more consistency and a better finish, especially if Virginia wants to keep its season alive into December. Reece Beekman Just Earned A Real NBA Opportunity

Reece Beekman is getting another chance to carve out a real NBA role, this time with the Washington Wizards. The former Virginia guard has signed a two-way contract, a meaningful step for a player who has already spent time bouncing between the NBA and G-League after going undrafted in 2024.

For Virginia fans, the fit adds a little extra interest beyond Beekmans own journey, since the Wizards also roster former Cavalier Anthony Gill. Beekman now has a clearer path to stick around Washington while also spending time with the Capital City Go-Go, and the next stretch will go a long way toward showing whether he can turn that opportunity into something more permanent. Virginia Just Delivered A Rivalry Win Cavaliers Fans Will Love

Rivalry games rarely need much of a backdrop, and this one between Virginia and Virginia Tech fit the script. The Cavaliers leaned on a familiar blend of patience and poise in a Smithfield Commonwealth Clash soccer matchup, then got the kind of late breakthrough that can define a seasons tone. Head coach Steve Swanson pointed to the resilience it takes to survive a game like that, where little comes easy and every mistake feels magnified.

Virginia finally found the opening deep into the match and made it count, enough to leave campus bragging rights intact and another tough road marker for the Hokies to digest. For a program that has spent years controlling this series, the result only reinforced how little margin exists in these meetings, even when the final score stays tight from start to finish.
