CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Virginia walked into Bank of America Stadium with momentum and left with another gut punch, falling 38-27 to West Virginia in a primetime non-conference matchup that turned sharply after the opening quarter.
The Cavaliers, now 2-1 and 1-0 in the ACC, were undone by a second-quarter surge from the Mountaineers and never fully recovered. West Virginia, which improved to 3-0, grabbed control by outscoring Virginia 14-0 in the second period and eventually stretched the margin to 38-21 in the fourth quarter, the first time Virginia has trailed by more than 10 points since 2024.
Quarterback Beau Pribula had one last chance to keep the game alive, looking left for a solution before West Virginia sacked him and forced a turnover on downs with just a few minutes remaining. A few moments later, Virginia was staring at a familiar kind of disappointment in Charlotte.
West Virginia did its damage in every direction. Running back Cam Cook and quarterback Michael Hawkins Jr. each piled up 120-plus rushing yards, and Hawkins finished with 313 total yards and five total touchdowns. The Mountaineers broke tackles all night and repeatedly turned Virginia’s defense into a guessing game.
That was the jarring part for Virginia, whose defense entered the game ranked ninth nationally in yards allowed per game and fifth in scoring defense. On Saturday, it gave up 437 yards and struggled to finish plays. Virginia also opened fast on the ground, rushing for 113 yards in the first quarter, but managed only 40 more the rest of the way.
The Cavaliers’ offense couldn’t make up the difference. Elliott said after the game, "We became more one-dimensional while we were playing from behind," and the numbers backed that up. Virginia scored 27 points, converted just six of 16 third downs, and allowed three sacks.
On paper, the Cavaliers still had reasons to feel good at halftime and beyond. They held the ball for more than six minutes longer than West Virginia and flashed early success on the ground. But once the Mountaineers adjusted, Virginia didn’t have an answer.
The result leaves Virginia in a tricky spot, even with the benefit of this being a non-conference loss. The Cavaliers were favored by roughly 10 points, and next Saturday’s game against Delaware now offers a chance to steady things. Nothing about the path ahead feels certain.
