Virginia opened the 2026 season by flattening NC State 34-8 at Scott Stadium, and the score told the story just as clearly as the eye test did. The Cavaliers were in control from the start, looked sharp in every phase, and turned what was expected to be a close ACC game into a lopsided statement.
That matters because Virginia didn’t just win by a comfortable margin. The Cavaliers handled what was supposed to be one of the better teams on their schedule and made NC State look ordinary. For a team trying to establish itself early, that kind of complete performance lands loud.
The biggest issue for NC State was CJ Bailey never settling in. Bailey came into the matchup with plenty of buzz as a darkhorse Heisman Trophy contender, but Virginia made him look nothing like that. The Cavaliers kept him under constant stress, squeezed the running game, and took away clean throwing windows all afternoon.
Virginia also created turnovers and spread the work around, which only added to how thorough the win felt. If the Cavaliers could do that against an NC State offense with this much talent, there’s plenty of reason to think they can keep rolling against teams like Wake Forest, North Carolina and others.
On the ground, Xavier Brown was the standout. He finished with two total touchdowns and more than 90 scrimmage yards, and he was the most efficient runner in the group. Brown outperformed both Jekail Middlebrook and Peyton Lewis, even though Middlebrook still handled the most carries.
That setup points toward something worth watching going forward: this may be less of a clear hierarchy at running back and more of a true committee.
Virginia’s offense still had some familiar wrinkles. Conservative play-calling showed up again, especially on third-and-short, where offensive coordinator Des Kitchings leaned on inside zone runs that took time to develop instead of pressing forward. It didn’t hurt the Cavaliers against NC State, but it’s the kind of thing that could matter later.
Even with that, the offense put up more than 30 points against a strong ACC opponent, which is a successful day by any standard. And there’s still more in the tank. Virginia’s attack has the look of something that can be even more explosive.
The quarterback situation was a big part of that. Pribula became the first Cavaliers quarterback to rush for 100 yards in a game since Brennan Armstrong did it in the 2022 season opener. He looked like a real dual-threat threat, and while he didn’t throw a ton, he did connect on a few deep strikes for long touchdowns.
Pribula is not Chandler Morris, and Virginia doesn’t need him to be. He looks like a better match for Kitchings’ system, and if his passing volume grows, the ceiling may be higher than people expected.
