Virginia didn’t look like a team trying to prove it belongs on Saturday. It looked like a team that already knew.
The Cavaliers rolled past NC State 34-8 and did it in a way that felt decisive from the opening moments. Tony Elliott’s group built a 17-0 halftime lead, then kept the pressure on until the game was out of reach. By the end, Virginia had piled up 413 total yards and limited NC State to 168 in front of 62,779 fans.
For a program that shocked the college football world by finishing 11-3 and reaching the ACC championship last season, the question entering 2026 was whether that level could hold. This was a loud answer.
Beau Pribula was right at the center of it. The Missouri transfer gave Virginia a true dual-threat look, rushing for 110 yards while throwing for 155 and two touchdowns. His ability to hurt defenses both ways gave the Cavaliers another gear, and the offensive line made sure the game played on Virginia’s terms for most of the afternoon.
NC State never found much traction. Its only touchdown came late in the third quarter on a 1-yard run by Will Wilson.
The win also carried a little bit of history with it: Virginia beat NC State at home for the first time since 2006. It came in front of a packed crowd and, more importantly, reinforced the idea that this is no longer some surprise story from last fall.
That said, “sleeper” may not quite fit anymore when it comes to Virginia’s actual quality. The Cavaliers were expected to win this game.
But in the broader national conversation, they still sit a step or two below the spotlight, even with the résumé they’ve built. That’s what makes them interesting.
There’s a real path here to another strong season. Virginia returns most of the core from last year’s breakthrough team, including the group that won 11 games and beat Missouri in its bowl game. The ceiling is still to be determined, though, and the schedule will have plenty to say about that.
The biggest tests are still coming. Virginia has to travel to Florida State on Oct. 3 and also has a neutral-site matchup with West Virginia. What happens in ACC play will tell the story of whether this was just another strong start or something bigger.
For now, though, the Cavaliers have done what good teams do: they handled business, looked the part, and left no doubt against a conference opponent that was supposed to be a solid measuring stick. A 26-point win like this keeps Virginia in the same kind of conversation it entered last year - and maybe raises the question of whether this team can push even further.
