Virginia didn’t just beat NC State in Week 0. The Hoos turned that opener into the kind of performance that got people talking everywhere from film-room podcasts to national college football shows.
The scoreboard told part of the story first: a 34-8 win, controlled from start to finish, and a 1-0 ACC start after Virginia went 11-3 last season. The attention followed quickly, especially after ESPN’s PR account noted that UVA-NCSU was the second most watched game of the weekend behind only UNC-TCU. The game drew 3.2 million average viewers and peaked at 4.0 million, though those numbers do not include the ACC Network, where Virginia’s game also aired from an All-22 camera view.
Once Saturday gave way to Sunday, the reaction only grew louder. The overall tone from analysts was clear: Virginia made a statement.
Former UVA quarterback Kurt Benkert led off with a blunt read, saying, "I think this UVA team is the real deal" while breaking down the film. Deuce Prince from the 4-3-4 Defense Pod also weighed in on how significant the win was for the Wahoos.
A string of national and conference shows echoed the same idea. The Ruffino & Joe Show said "Virginia Just Sent A Warning Shot To The Entire ACC", while Gramlich & Mac Lain opened with, "Shoutout to the Hoos.
It looked good on TV. It looked really good."
The Bunch Formation show with Chris Vannini and David Ubben called it a "STATEMENT" win.
Other breakdowns came in with similarly strong language. On the Saturday vs Sunday show, John Barban and Geoff Dover titled their segment "UVA Steamrolls NC State In A Near-Perfect Football Game." The Solid Verbal College Football Show went with "Virginia Just Demolished NC State" in its video.
The film study didn’t stop with general reactions. Landon Tengwall, who played at Penn State and was a teammate with Beau Pribula, posted an X’s and O’s breakdown titled "Why Virginia's Offense Is The Perfect Fit For Beau Pribula" that has more than 7,000 views. That clip also caught the attention of Sabre fans enough that Preston Willett brought Tengwall onto The Hoos On Podcast for a longer conversation.
There was also an opposing-side breakdown from an NC State observer. During the preseason, the sweep had highlighted a Trinity Road Times video about pass progressions for Wolfpack quarterback CJ Bailey. That same account revisited the film after the game and examined what became a rough afternoon for Bailey and NC State.
Reaction from the Wolfpack side included videos about defensive coordinator DJ Eliot’s postgame comments. Pack Power labeled the comments “baffling” in its title, and Locked On Wolfpack followed with a video titled "WHAT?"
The game’s reach stretched beyond the usual Virginia audience, too. Because it was played in Week 0, it drew interest from social accounts that may not normally focus on UVA.
Several Instagram creators posted about the game, Charlottesville, and the atmosphere around it. Caden Davis, who has more than 140,000 followers and appears at games regularly, was at Virginia last week before heading to LSU for Clemson this week.
James Knorr, who came down from Ohio to watch, also shared a video from the game after being spotted by Sabre subscriber Cav113. Talk Ball Daily added its own praise for Beau Pribula from afar.
Virginia basketball news also picked up this week. Ryan Odom’s team will play an exhibition against Richmond on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. in John Paul Jones Arena, and that game is now part of Homecomings weekend, with the football team hosting Syracuse on Saturday. The kickoff time for that game has not yet been announced.
The Hoos also released another short “Proving Grounds” video as the season build-up continued, and there was a Corner Media Company interview in which he discussed why he stayed at Virginia and more.
On the women’s basketball side, Virginia landed a commitment from 2027 post Lisa Sirgi, a 6’5” top 100 recruit. She was featured in an interview tied to the announcement.

Ryan Odom has wasted no time building a nonconference slate that should tell Virginia plenty about where it stands before March arrives. Arkansas, Maryland, Kentucky, UConn, Marquette and Xavier already give the Cavaliers a healthy dose of style, size and reputation, and that kind of schedule fits a program trying to harden itself for the tournament rather than pad its record in November and December.
The next step is finding a few more opponents that make sense for the program, and there are some natural fits worth revisiting. Vanderbilt offers a regional matchup with academic and SEC appeal, Georgetown brings history and brand recognition from the Mid-Atlantic, and Michigan State carries the sort of national profile and postseason-level challenge that would fit right into what Virginia is trying to build under Odom.
