Virginia Just Delivered A Rivalry Win Cavaliers Fans Will Love

Sophia Bradley's late heroics clinch a crucial win for Virginia in a tightly contested derby against Virginia Tech.

Sophia Bradley picked the perfect moment to finish the job for No. 18 Virginia.

With the game stuck in a stalemate for 85 minutes, Bradley chipped in the winner from six yards out in the 86th minute on Friday night, sending the Cavaliers past Virginia Tech, 1-0, in a Smithfield Commonwealth Clash matchup.

The decisive sequence started when Virginia worked the ball to Ella Carter on the left side of the box. Carter carried it toward the end line, cut back, and slipped a pass into Bradley, who lifted the shot up and in from the top of the six.

For most of the night, though, neither side could find the breakthrough. The two teams traded chances over the first 85 minutes, and both were denied at times by the woodwork in a game that stayed tight throughout.

Virginia improved to 8-3-2 overall and 4-3-0 in ACC play with the win. Virginia Tech fell to 6-4-4 and 2-3-1.

The result also gave Virginia a point in the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash, leaving the overall score tied 1.5 to 1.5 after the match. The Cavaliers also moved to 26-4-2 in the all-time series against the Hokies.

Bradley’s finish marked her second straight game-winner, after she also scored the decisive goal at SMU.

Head coach Steve Swanson said, “It was great to see us win the game and get three points in the ACC. This is a tough place to play; any place in the ACC is a tough place to play, but this in particular because it’s a rivalry game.

We weren’t as sharp as we normally are and didn’t have many shots on frame. Defensively, we held.

It became a transition game for a bit there which is to their advantage. We bent, but we didn’t break and got the goal at the end.

I’m proud of the team. We showed a lot of resilience and grit.”

Virginia is back home next week for Clemson on Thursday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Klöckner Stadium.

Virginias Bowl Path Just Got Tougher After Another Offensive Letdown

Virginias offense never found much rhythm in its recent loss to SMU, and the result left the Cavaliers with a much narrower margin for error as they chase bowl eligibility. They scored only one touchdown in the game, and the problems were even more apparent after halftime, when Virginia managed just three points and could not keep pace once the game tightened.

Now the path gets harder with five games left and two wins still needed to get to bowl eligibility. For a team that has already had too many uneven stretches on offense, the next stretch will demand more consistency and a better finish, especially if Virginia wants to keep its season alive into December. Virginia Let Another Costly Problem Ruin A Rivalry Match

Virginias trip to Koskinen Stadium turned into another frustrating night in a rivalry that has too often gone the wrong way, as Duke rolled to a 3-0 win and handed the Cavaliers their first shutout loss of the season. The Blue Devils built their margin with a free kick goal among their three scores, while Virginia spent most of the match trying to survive without the sort of control it needed to settle things down.

The trouble started just before halftime, when Isaac Mwakutuya was sent off on a second yellow card and left Virginia a man short for the entire second half. The Cavaliers were already in a difficult spot when the game tightened further late, and the loss added another painful chapter to a season in which discipline has become a glaring issue. Reece Beekman Just Earned A Real NBA Opportunity

Reece Beekman is getting another chance to carve out a real NBA role, this time with the Washington Wizards. The former Virginia guard has signed a two-way contract, a meaningful step for a player who has already spent time bouncing between the NBA and G-League after going undrafted in 2024.

For Virginia fans, the fit adds a little extra interest beyond Beekmans own journey, since the Wizards also roster former Cavalier Anthony Gill. Beekman now has a clearer path to stick around Washington while also spending time with the Capital City Go-Go, and the next stretch will go a long way toward showing whether he can turn that opportunity into something more permanent.
