Virginia Found A Late Spark At The Perfect Time

In a thrilling finish, Virginia's Addison Halpern clinched a dramatic 90th-minute equalizer against Clemson, keeping her team in the fight.

Addison Halpern waited until the final minute to leave her mark, and No. 21 Virginia walked away with a 1-1 draw against Clemson on Thursday night at Klöckner Stadium.

The Cavaliers were staring at a loss after Clemson broke through late in the first half, but Halpern delivered the equalizer in the 90th minute to rescue a point for Virginia.

Clemson (6-4-5, 2-3-3 ACC) opened the scoring at 44 minutes after a turnover near midfield set the play in motion. Dani Davis lofted a ball over the top, Reagan Thompson got behind the defense, chipped it forward to herself on the bounce and finished the sequence for a 1-0 lead.

Virginia (8-3-3, 4-3-1) had the last word. In the closing seconds, Pearl Cecil carried the ball upfield and sent a long ball over the top to Carrie Helfrich on the right side.

Helfrich gathered it, drove toward the box and slipped the ball to Halpern to the left of the penalty mark. Halpern fired a low shot to the keeper’s right.

The Clemson goalkeeper got a hand to it, but not enough to keep it out.

It was Virginia’s first goal in the 90th minute since Talia Staude scored a game-winner at NC State on Sept. 26, 2021.

Halpern’s finish was her ninth goal of the season, giving her a team-high 22 points. She has now been involved in a goal in 10 of Virginia’s 14 games, and the Cavaliers are 7-1-2 in those matches.

“It was a much better second half (for us). You look at the two teams and figured it would be a game like that.

I’m proud of the team. We battled hard, especially in the second half.

We had some really good chances and were in better control in the second half. You can look at it two ways - we got a point, but we’re disappointed in the first half.

We didn’t play as well and gave up a goal with a minute to go in the half. We’re glad to get the point and it could be a difference maker.”

Virginia is back home next Thursday, Oct. 29, when it hosts No. 13 Louisville. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. on ACC Network.

Michigan Fans Have A New Reason To Watch Trey McKenney

Virginias backcourt picture is drawing attention heading into next season, with Chance Mallory in line to become a much bigger part of the Cavaliers offense after a promising freshman year. The projection game around college basketball is already starting to center on players like Mallory, whose first season offered a clear glimpse of what he can do as a scorer, rebounder and distributor.

Mallorys rise matters because Virginia needs someone to organize the offense and help set the tone for a group that will be leaning on development as much as experience. The expectations around him are building for the 2026-27 season, and the questions now are less about whether he belongs in the conversation than how far his role can expand once the Cavaliers put the ball in his hands more often. Virginia Faces A Friday Night Test That Could Define Its Season

Virginia heads into Friday night with a chance to turn a shaky season into something more stable, and the setting at home only adds to the pressure on Duke. The Cavaliers are unbeaten at home this year, while the Blue Devils arrive after dropping two straight following a strong opening stretch. Both teams need momentum, but Virginia has the clearer opportunity to make the night feel like a statement if it can control the game early.

A big part of that comes down to how Virginia handles Dukes ground attack and whether its own run game can answer back. The Cavaliers know the Blue Devils can lean on their best runner to settle things down, so the task is as much about discipline as it is tackling. If Virginia can create balance on offense and keep Duke from dictating the pace, Friday night could tilt in a direction that says a lot about where the rest of the season is headed. [Read more 🡒]

Virginias Final Tune Up Brought A Big Reason For Optimism

Virginia finished its preseason with a sharp showing at Villanova, rolling to a 93-71 win in the final exhibition game at Finneran Pavilion. The result gave Ryan Odom and his group a useful late look at where they stand before the games start counting, and the scoring balance was just as encouraging as the final margin.

Five Cavaliers reached double figures, with forward Thijs De Ridder and guard Chance Mallory among the headliners in a performance that suggested there is more than one way for this roster to create offense. Odom will now turn his attention to his first ACC Tournament game on Thursday, carrying at least one clear reason for optimism into the next stage. [Read more 🡒]
