Virginia’s high school football week of Sept. 24-26 was packed with eye-popping stat lines, and the latest High School On SI Player of the Week poll has no shortage of heavy hitters.
At the top of the list is James Wood quarterback Owen Neal, who was surgical in a 56-26 win over Warren County. Neal completed 16 of 21 passes for 351 yards and four touchdowns, adding to a week that also featured Glen Allen running back Jakeem Dandridge’s 347 rushing yards and Woodbridge’s James Shaw III piling up 500-plus all-purpose yards.
Dandridge turned 40 carries into 347 rushing yards and four touchdowns, and he also caught two passes for 71 yards and another score as Glen Allen edged Hampton 48-41. Shaw’s night was just as wild in Woodbridge’s 51-0 rout of Hylton, where he finished with 500-plus all-purpose yards and eight touchdowns, though multiple scores were called back.
The nominees also include South County quarterback Miller, who went 22-of-31 for 325 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-21 victory over West Springfield, and Lake Braddock running back Rhye, who ran 25 times for 241 yards and four touchdowns in a 35-21 win over Robinson.
Turner Ashby wide receiver Smith made his case with three catches for 128 yards and a touchdown in a 42-7 win over Strasburg. Maury running back Branche was even more explosive on the ground, rushing for 138 yards and five touchdowns on just 11 carries in a 58-6 win over Churchland.
Several nominees stuffed the stat sheet in more than one way. Stafford’s Dalton delivered a huge performance in a 37-7 win over Mountain View, throwing for 416 yards and three touchdowns on 18-of-27 passing while also collecting 11 tackles, a tackle for loss, an interception, and a pass breakup on defense.
St. James Academy quarterback Carter threw four touchdown passes in a 50-6 win over Cardinal Ritter College Prep (MO), while St.
Stephen’s & St. Agnes receiver Herring caught eight passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns in a 27-6 win over Sidwell Friends (DC).
New Kent sophomore Young made his mark defensively with 11 tackles, including five solo stops, and a sack in a 24-21 win over Smithfield. Atlantic Shores Christian quarterback Lance also filled the box score in a 49-6 win over John Marshall, going 23-of-30 for 285 yards and four touchdowns, rushing six times for 73 yards and two more scores, and adding an interception and a tackle on defense.
Voting closes at 11:59 p.m. PT on Oct. 4, and the winner will be revealed in next week’s poll.

Virginias defensive profile still looks good on paper, but the numbers come with a warning label after that lopsided night against West Virginia changed the picture. Hosted by John Freeman, the show will be available through radio affiliates and online, and listeners can also jump in with question submissions and giveaways.
The guest this week is running back Jekail Middlebrook, giving Cavaliers fans a chance to hear from one of the offenses early bright spots in an informal setting. Through four games, Middlebrook has emerged as a player worth paying attention to, and this platform offers a chance to get a better feel for how Virginia is viewing his role as the season moves along. Virginia Fans Now Know When Homecomings Gets A Bigger Stage
Virginia fans finally have a clearer picture of when Homecomings will get its biggest spotlight, as the ACC has set the Cavaliers home date with Syracuse for the evening window. The matchup is part of a busy Week 5 slate around the league, and it gives Virginia another chance to put a home crowd in the center of the action with a nationally available broadcast.
Syracuse has not been a frequent visitor to Charlottesville, which adds a little extra edge to this one beyond the usual conference stakes.
