College football’s opening weekend has a little bit of everything: a trip to Dublin, a late-night game in Las Vegas, and a few matchups that should tell us plenty before September even gets rolling.
The headliner for pure intrigue is Memphis at UNLV, a night game in Las Vegas that brings real postseason weight with it. UNLV enters as a 5.5-point favorite, and the total of 57.5 points points to a game that should have enough scoring to stay lively.
Beyond the numbers, there’s something bigger hanging over it. Memphis and UNLV are both expected to be in the mix for the highest-ranked conference champion spot outside the four power conferences, which means this August meeting could matter again when the College Football Playoff committee starts comparing resumes.
Another game with plenty of attention comes from overseas, where North Carolina and TCU open the season in Dublin, Ireland at noon ET on ESPN. TCU is a 7.5-point favorite, but these international openers have a way of turning strange fast.
Travel, new faces and early-game mistakes can flatten the edge one team is supposed to have. North Carolina, now under Bill Belichick, is trying to steady itself after a turbulent offseason, and an upset would immediately shift the conversation around the program.
TCU, though, has a chance to shut that down quickly by taking control early.
The first ACC game of the season also carries real weight, with NC State visiting Virginia at 3:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
Virginia is a 5.5-point favorite after an 11-win season, even if several of those wins came down to the final possession. NC State has a shot to catch the Cavaliers before they settle in and steal an early road conference win.
A loss in August wouldn’t end either team’s ACC hopes, but it would leave the loser in chase mode before Labor Day, and that’s a rough place to start.
North Dakota State’s new FBS era gets underway against a familiar kind of measuring-stick opponent when Jacksonville State comes to the Fargodome at 5:30 p.m. ET on CBS Sports Network.
Jacksonville State is a seven-point underdog, and the setting should be plenty hostile. North Dakota State gets an immediate chance to show its dominance isn’t just an FCS story anymore, and this one has the feel of a game that could get very physical, very quickly.
Rounding out the list is Hawaii at Stanford, a matchup that may not feature national title contenders but still deserves a look. Stanford is only a four-point favorite, which makes it one of the closest projected games on the board.
The Cardinal need proof that their rebuild is headed somewhere, while Hawaii has a chance to grab a valuable road win against a Power Four opponent. It may not be pretty, but close games between flawed teams usually have their own appeal.
