Virginia aims to upset top-seed Duke by sticking to their strategy in the ACC final showdown, despite a tough regular-season loss and key injuries on both sides.

Charlotte Showdown: Virginia vs. Duke in ACC Final

The stage is set for a thrilling ACC tournament final as No. 10 Virginia gears up to face No.

1 Duke. With the memory of their last encounter still fresh, Virginia is sticking to its game plan, seeking redemption without a major overhaul.

Virginia coach Ryan Odom is confident in his team’s approach. “We’re deep into the season, and our process is solid. We just need to stick with it,” he stated.

Duke, boasting a 31-2 record, is on the hunt for back-to-back championships. The Cavaliers, sitting at 29-4, last claimed the ACC tournament crown in 2018. Virginia guard Malik Thomas expressed the team’s excitement: “It’s a great opportunity to compete for an ACC championship.”

A victory for Duke would mark a historic achievement, making them the first ACC team to secure both the regular-season and tournament titles in consecutive years since the Blue Devils did it in 1999 and 2000.

In their previous matchup on February 28, Duke dominated with a 77-51 victory. However, they’ll be without key players Patrick Ngongba II and Caleb Foster for the final, both sidelined due to injuries. Their absence could impact the game, as they contributed significantly in the last meeting.

Reflecting on the previous game, Duke coach Jon Scheyer noted, “It feels like a million years ago in some respects. Virginia has big-time firepower, and we’ve got to be ready.”

Duke’s shooting was on fire in that game, hitting 50% from beyond the arc, while Virginia struggled at 20%.

Virginia faces its own challenges, with concerns about center Johann Grunloh’s wrist injury. Odom remains optimistic: “There’s nothing structurally wrong. He’ll be ready to go.”

Both teams gained momentum in their semifinal victories. Virginia dispatched third-seeded Miami with an 84-62 win, while Duke controlled fifth-seeded Clemson, eventually securing a 73-61 victory.

Odom emphasized the strength of his roster: “It’s about the totality of our team. These guys support each other and show the poise needed to win.”

Duke utilized a tight rotation in their semifinal, with Scheyer acknowledging Virginia’s depth as a potential factor. “Their depth is a strength, but our rotations will keep us fresh. Playing for a championship is a blessing, and fatigue won’t be an issue.”

Odom aims to become the fourth coach in his first ACC season to lead a team to the conference championship, adding another layer of intrigue to this matchup.

Interestingly, this showdown mirrors the ACC football championship from a few months back, where Duke edged out Virginia in overtime. The basketball court now offers Virginia a chance for payback in what promises to be an epic battle.
